If you look at the direction of the fibers a "normal" t-plate has the fibers at 90 degrees to the direction of the plate. When they make the bias cut plates, they angle the material at 45 degrees, so the fibers are then at 45 degrees in relation to the direction of the plate. The 45 degree angle makes it feel softer.
