If you look closely, you'll see that the engine assembly is not actully attached to the sprue - the sprue is resting on top of the piece. The piece attaches to the sprue at the very bottom-most part of that piece.

(I'd show a pic, but the kit I've got is already off the sprue having been tape assembled / disassembled / re-tape assembled several times while I do measurement checks for an etch set.)

Putting the sprue in where it looks like it is in the photo would be terribly expensive since there'd have to be side action built into the mold ... and it wouldn't do anything useful being assembled that way since there is raised detail right there.
