Based in Australia, Top Gear was founded in the garage of John Eassie in 1986. They are known as the makers of the "Trax" (cars) and "Trux" (trucks and buses) diecast series.

At first they were sold under the umbrella of Matchbox Collectibles before become an independent marketer.

Their "Trax" series was done in 1:43 scale. Of interest to the small scale miniatures collector is an FJ Holden Van that is closer to the 3" scale size. They carried 'The Courier-Mail" newspaper livery and were only available to Top Gear club members. It was released just before the Matchbox model.

In the mid 2000s, the former head of Matchbox of Australia was the then current manager of Top Gear.
