Nowadays you can make a lot of custom cars for yourself. If you have a little patience, a lot of clay, and some space you can make your own car. It won't be perfect but if you don't have 10K in loose change it's the next best thing. Besides if you wait long enough someone eventually will make the car you want in 1:64.
I haven't made cars but I did make my own star trek ships. I just recently started customizing 1:64 scale cars. I'll post pictures of my finished work when I'm done.
Does it have to be die cast? How about plastic bodies, with posts inside to screw a chassis to? There are plenty of die cast cars that aren't made into slot cars, yet.
This would change everything. Ask Jin. Plastic tools are inherently less money to tool. That is, if you want to simply use an existing chassis. If you want a chassis too that's another matter.
