It's true. Sick of diecast companies not tooling up the cars you want to see? Wish someone would do that car you've always dreamed of--that '75 Caprice convertible, that BMW 507, that picture-perfect Superbird, that car you just know is speeding through Gotham on a Dark Knight? Want to get into a new business opportunity--or maybe just make some $$ on the side? For less than the cost of a new Chevy Aveo, you can have the tooling for, and a prototype of, whatever car you wish!

For your money you get:

* a resin prototype of a diecast car
* a completed tool to make that car a reality!

Final cost of the production piece will vary, depending on level of detail, quantity you order, etc, and you would be responsible for getting licensing and distribution, as well as research materials to the workshop in China to create the mockup. You control the scale, the decor, everything! The tooling would be YOURS...you could commission five thousand copies of your car, or one thousand copies in each of five different colors. You can make more or have the tooling destroyed upon completion of the run. It's all up to YOU!

I was talking with a guy at Goodguys last night that cuts them out of aluminum on a CNC machine, says he has 1000s of programs, his samples looked good, base price, 1/64, no paint, interior, or windows, $99, finished $150 up. He had some sweet 1/18 hed done.

It sure is an option that we didn't have in the past but I'd have to pass for these reasons.



First, if I had that kind of expendable cash laying around I'd buy me a real car. You can get a pretty fair start on something really cool for 10,000.00 in Northern Indiana.

Second, I'm not sure I could legally pick out a casting that hasn't already been done that could financially support that kind of investment. I don't have that kind of coin so I'd have to sell them off and if I have a hard time selling 300 limiteds, how in the world would I sell 5,000 worth or 1,000 of each color?

Third, I like to work through a real company here in the states. They may only be a "middle man" but at least they have brick and mortar here. If things go south who do I go after in the fine Republic of China?

Fourth, who is going to buy a Mark Hosaflook casting? No reputation, no brand following in the tune of 5,000 castings? People WANT Hot Wheels on their base and Johnny Lightning. Those names sell castings. There is no "chase" frenzy built up either in a one off.

Fifth, RC2, JL and HW have just about most castings I'm interested in already minted. All you have to do is contact them, decide on a casting, pick all your colors and graphics, decide what tampos you want and bingo, for a fraction of the price, you have your car. It seems to work at shows, Fest, events, Teddy, LexMark, Liberty Promotions etc have been using this formula for years. 5,000 is a very dangerous number to sell even with chase cars because most buy enough casting to get the "chase" then turn around and sell the others off eveywhere else becoming your OWN competition.

One last comment, 5000 is a larger run than many PM regular issue castings and I've seen many of these castings go for 1.00 each at Fest. If PM can't sell 5,000 with the support they have, how in the world could I do it?

There may be some people with deep pockets who just want to get a certain car made and don't mind dropping $10K for 25 cars for their own collection and to give to few friends, and then destroying the mold.

I understand the program, I was simply stating my opinion and why it doesn't work for me and to lay out some possible things to think about for those who may have stars in their eyes. This is HobbyTalk, right?

Also, I could find a person like Gunn or Jeff Fleetwood to make me a one off if that's all I wanted. No, this is not a limited plan. Those people already commision people to do that kinda stuff. This is set up for the retail dreamer in all of us.

Not that I have a extra 10 bills to spare, but I wonder how much on top of that would be involved here? Shipping, packaging, storage licensing etc.

China is half a world away.
My sister Nancy does business there often through her employer, The Upper Deck Company (baseball cards). Problems encountered because UD had no physical business presense there made solving even the simplest of typical production problems hellacious.

No, you get the resin and the tool. Blisters, coins, packaging (very important) license etc are still up to you. Go knock off a Barris Batmobile and try and market it and see how much more $$ you are going to need.

$10,000 may get you the tooling cost, then you have to pay for the cars, transortation, insurance.......better figure $20,000 or more. That's why Tom sold out to RC2. There is a lot of money tied up in them tar die cast cars.

I mentioned it on a board for a specific make/model of car and so far... no one seems interested in chipping in any money. The problem is, even with many great models to make, finding people to agree on which models to make, and then chip in money.

Does it have to be die cast? How about plastic bodies, with posts inside to screw a chassis to? There are plenty of die cast cars that aren't made into slot cars, yet.
