You can now buy hand held lasers strong enough to melt plastic. I have seen that one demonstrated burning a hole in a model tank. Fun but very dangerous.

A friend of mine used to make holograms back in the 90's, one of his favorite sayings was "never look directly into laser with remaining good eye". He was actually blind in one eye thanks to his carelessness with the laser.

I believe this is the real deal. They explain the model of laser involved and that they can melt plastic. But, I have to admit, the actual beam at times looks "enhanced."

I also agree that this is an accident waiting to happen around kids or adults + alcohol.

And, if this laser can indeed do this damage, has the emitter in the toy been replaced with glass or removed? Wouldn't it melt first?

I believe the only enhancement was that the guy made the room smoky so the beam would stand out more.

Just wait. Some kid will blind his friend, cause a car crash, etc. Then these will require the same permits as handguns.

Hard to tell from the video, but it looks like the acrylic emitter has possibly been replaced with a hollow aluminum piece. Should be transparent aluminum.

I've tried to think of ways to incorporate one of these into a model for a while now.

The guy was one of the early examples using a 405nm (violet-blue) laser diode in a Playmates TOS Phaser. Nothing new. Another guy named Kipkay was the first do do the same I believe. And in case you were wondering, I wear laser safety goggles for the appropriate wavelength and use a small amount of smoke machine smoke to enhance beam visibility.....
