I believe this is the real deal. They explain the model of laser involved and that they can melt plastic. But, I have to admit, the actual beam at times looks "enhanced."

I also agree that this is an accident waiting to happen around kids or adults + alcohol. :p

And, if this laser can indeed do this damage, has the emitter in the toy been replaced with glass or removed? Wouldn't it melt first?

The guy was one of the early examples using a 405nm (violet-blue) laser diode in a Playmates TOS Phaser. Nothing new. Another guy named Kipkay was the first do do the same I believe. I have been putting lasers into Trek replicas for about 4 years now. Check out my links below (sybian04) on You Tube:
