The 1701, 1701-A, and 1701-D were all originally part of a single box kit. The 1701-B, 1701-C, and 1701-E were part of another 3-ship box set, released many years later. All from AMT/Ertl. Round 2 simply restored the tooling, left out the "3-ship stands," and tossed in soe nice new decals (the original decals were for banners and markings only, and were just downscaled versions of the often-inaccurate larger scale decals.)

Thar explains many of your observations, doesn't it? :)

Additionally, the three "adversary" ships were originally a single box.
Yep... and the Warbird was the only reason to buy that box set... the Ferengi ship, while reasonably accurate, was in a ludicrously small scale (Remember, it's supposed to be about the same size as the Galaxy class!). And the Klingon BOP in that set was not only in a ludicrous size, it was also phsyically inaccurate (in order to permit the wings to move, as I recall). I'm sure the bits of that BOP are in a box bottom SOMEWHERE in my garage, but I'm sure I'll never see it again.

The Romulan is the ONLY reason to buy that. Of course, scale for the Romulan ship is dubious as well... as, technically, the only ship it would be in scale two would be the old die-cast Galaxy class ship (http://www.amazon.com/Die-Cast-U-S-S-Enterprise-Starship-NCC-1701-D/dp/B000M1K5NY)... or the FASA, SFB, or Gamescience minis... remember, this ship was always supposed to be about 3X as large as the Galaxy class!
As for the 1701-C, that's another repop of a 90's gem, one that I'm currently on the hunt for, mainly for the decals and certain details parts (the deflector dish and lower saucer sensor dome), so that I can do the old clear version (released as the USS Yamaguchi) as the Enterprise-C (although since they have rereleased this kit, I'm no longer in a mad dash to get an original kit; just waiting for the money and the opportunity...
I've got both the 1701-C and the clear "Yamaguchi." Never built up either one, though... they're just loose parts in their boxes (with the smaller bits in ziplock baggies).

I keep realizing how much money I've spent throughout my life in kits that I'll likely never get around to building... my Cardassian ship, my Defiant, my DS9... oh, and that gem, the Death Star... and on and on... got a ton of built kits, but also a ton of half-built kits, and just as many never-built ones. If I were to die tomorrow, I think I'd better leave instructions on where to sell all this stuff off, huh?;)
