Lets say some plastics company were to take on producing new plastic kits from TNS Battlestar Galactica.

What kits do you think would be the best sellers.

For the poll, pick the kit you want the most.
You may also list your line-up in your reply, and stipulate another scale if you wish.
note: the prices I picked out, are what I thought each would cost.

The choices are.....

1. 1/2500 Battlestar Galactica.
2. 1/32 Viper Mk. II.
3. 1/32 Viper Mk. VI.
4. 1/32 Raptor.
5. 1/32 Cylon Raider.
6. 1/2500 Cylon Baseship.
7. 1/2500 Battlestar Pegasus.
8. 1/350 Colonial One.
9. 1/6 Cylon Centurian.

Were I to pick just one, I'd have a very hard time choosing between a Galactica and a Mk II Viper. Assuming price reflects level of detail, I opted for the Battlestar.

small goof on my part.
I listed the Mk. VII's as Mk. VI.
I hope we all know I MEANT Mk. VII.

As for the price comment, it also reflects size of the kit.

A 1/2500 Battlestar is going to be about 24" long, while most of the fighters are going to fall in the 10"-13"in range.

You can't price a kit by length. It must be done by parts count. I can't imagine a 22.5" Nu Galactica in styrene being less than $70.

As a builder of smaller models, I would have selected "None of the above" but it wasn't offered.

A Galactica about the same size and/or scale as the original Monogram kit would be my first choice. 1/72nd scale for the Vipers, Raiders and Raptors come second . . . and we already have some of them.

While I agree you can't price a kit by length alone, I disagree that it is also soley done by parts count alone. A single part such as the saucer top and bottoms from the PL refit are quite expensive parts vs. a single part such as the top of the travel pod from the same kit.

It is a combination of factors such as parts count, size of tooling material needed, volume of plastic used, detail in each part, etc. and each factor taking up more or less a percentage of that cost.

Polar Lights showed that you could do a 34in Enterprise Refit for about $42.00 and at 150 parts.

While other model companies are not PL and have different overheads, I still think that a kit such as this could be done for about $50.00 to $60.00.

Personally, my choices (in order) would be:

  1. Battlestar Galactica
  2. Battlestar Pegasus
  3. Viper Mk II (Galactica markings)
  4. Viper Mk VII (Pegasus / Galactica Markings)
  5. Cylon Base Ship
  6. Cylon Raider
  7. Colonial One
  8. Raptor
I think I'd only want a Cylon Centurion if there were kits of the TOS and TNS versions available (for comparison).

Okay, assuming he's right about the 22.5" length(source?) I'd have to vote for the BSG first and blatantly copy ClubTepes' order of desirability:

1.) 1/2500 Battlestar Galactica
2.) 1/32 Viper Mk. II.
3.) 1/32 Cylon Raider.
4.) 1/32 Viper Mk.VII.
5.) 1/2500 Cylon Baseship
6.) 1/32 Raptor
7.) 1/350 Colonial One
8.) 1/2500 Battlestar Pegasus
9.) 1/6 Cylon Centurian

Also don't forget a 1/6th Number #6, and throw in a figure kit of the female Pegasus commander spanking Lucy Lawless. :)
