Hey folks, I have a Toro mower with a Briggs 6.75 hp. Just finished spring maintenance including new filter, oil, spark plug, cleaned carb, and new blade to boot.

After about 30 minutes of mowing, the cap popped off the oil filler tube and out shot the oil all over the place. I am stumped, the only thing I can think of is that I over-filled the oil.

Also, when mowing over tall or thick grass/weeds, the mower will slow down and make a loud fast-paced rattle noise. Maybe valves?

Thanks in advance!!

Most likely did not have the dipstick locked on the filler tube good. Over filling with oil will not blow the dip stick out, but will saturate the air filter with oil and is generally not good for the engine.

The noise you are hearing is not unusual if your mulching your clippings, but could also be cause by a loose blade, make sure the blade is torqued to about 55 ft/lbs.

Ok, I will double check the oil cap, maybe there's a chance it rattled loose?

I did torque the new blade to the specs that came with the blade, and I do mulch with the mower so I am not too worried about that.

Thanks!
