I got away from all the free MP3 downloads because of all the contraversy.... especially Kazaa... I did hear from a friend that there was a new Kazaa called 'Kazaa resurected or reborn' or something like that... maybe they have just shut down Kazaa lite for good?

yeah what Chad said about WinMX... my brother is a programmer, and he stays away from Kazaa like the plague because of all the other stuff it installs. Never had a problem with WinMX.

Whenever you get wind of a new 'freeware' or 'shareware' program I'd suggest that you go to Download.com (http://www.download.com/) and read the reviews and users opinions about the program. It may save you some major aggrevation or much worse. Be wary of skewed opinions that only have one or two submissions.

I have a very negative opinion of Kazaa. I've had to help more than a few friends restore their PCs to normal after Kazaa Media Desktop turned their PCs into spyware distribution systems and virus portals. I'd steer clear of any program that opens up your personal computer to access from the outside. Even if the file sharing program itself doesn't embed spyware it may be creating a vulnerability that a virus writer can exploit. It ain't worth it.

I use a service called Rhapsody. It isn't a shareware program. It's a music service provided by my cable company that allows you to download music for a per song fee. You can just plug your sound card directly to your stereo receiver and not have to download anything. It doesn't do MP3, but I can burn CDs on my dual disc CD recorder. I hardly ever use my PC CD burner.

i know this is an old thread but try a newer thing call Bit Torrent.... works like kazza morpheus and the rest except you need a program like bit tornado http://bittornado.com/... then in a search engine look up torrents like so

http://www.google.com/search?q=torrents&sourceid=firefox&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

with torrents you arent really connecting to a server like kazza all you dl is the .torrent file (usually 40kb) it then asks what do you want to open the .torrent file with locate bit tornado or azureus (my fav.) http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

then it's all down hill from there...

more links to some good torrent sites:

http://www.suprnova.org/
movies tv shows music programs etc

http://www.piratebay.net/frame.html
in german but you can make things out

http://www.tvtorrents.net/
miss your fav. show get them here

http://www.btefnet.com/
ditto from above

http://www.searchtorrent.com/
find any torrent you want

while doing this you may want to get another program one of the following will work

Peer Guardian
http://www.methlabs.org/

Protowall
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=5

what these 2 things do is not allow certain known ip address get in on a torrent your downloading or seeding (seeding means after your done you allow others to get it from you) Known IP's it bans is say sony, riaa, etc

hope this helps!

Just thought I'd let you know I found the kazaa reborn site and gave it to her, shes happy. Personally I really like WinMX but I might check out some of the others that were suggested. I don't do a lot of downloading since I'm on a slow dial up and it takes forever!

Heres another question for you guys, I have a 56K modem, and the number I dial says it's V90/K56 but I have never been able to connect above 26400, why is that? Someone once told me it was the phone lines, they were old and couldn't carry anything higher, does that make sense? And would that be the lines in the house that I could replace or the outside lines?

And I know DSL and broadbrand ect are great but it's not financially possible for me right now.

Just a guess... not necessarily the phone lines as in actual physical wires, but the local phone network your line is connected to. When I was on dialup, I had a 56k and it used to say it was connected at like 112k or 121k or something. My brother the computer geek told me that apparently my local phone system had been recently updated and had plenty of extra capacity... hey tech guys, is that possible? does that make sense?

sounds like that could be true. the physical phone lines themselves also play a big part in the connection also. my mother in there old house could only connect at 14.4 on a 56k modem. they moved to a newer more updated house and walah 48.8. she's happier. i still think it sucks. i have cable though. if it is affordable to you i would highly suggest it. i can download songs in about 15-20 seconds. i have so many now i need a bigger hard drive.

Chadms! It was you that reccomended Winmx to me! I couldn't remember who it was, thanks!

I would give the cable a shot except for the fact that I've had free cable since I moved in here 2 years ago, if I get thier connection they'd find out about the freebie and I'd have to start paying that too :)

I'll be jobless as of next friday so a step up in connection just ain't in the cards right now.

It's kind of funny, when I lived way out in the country I connected at 32 or 33, when I moved to the city I figured it would be better lines and better connection, thats when it dropped to 26,400. So much for living high in the city
