Back in 2002 - 2003 I did alot of reworking with a friend of mine from Texas on the Playing Mantis reissues of the Evel Knievel toy line. The original look of the costume and bike were horrible and looked nothing like the real suit or jump bike so here were my reworks after looking at alot of videos and bike art.

I had no idea PM reissued those. I had the originals back in the early 70s as a kid. They broke real easily but were still very cool. These were some of the first "action figures" I can remember that were not GI Joe style.

About 13 years ago, when I was working for the USF Contemporary Art Museum in Tampa, we did a pop culture show that featured memories and memorabilia related to Evel. Since Evel lived over in Clearwater or St. Pete at the time, we approached him to participate and he graciously loaned us costumes, one of his bikes and the refurbished Skycycle for the show. Better than that he brought some of the toys from his own personal collection and we got to play with them a little with Evel out in one of the big galleries with a nice hardwood floor. I was saddened to hear of his passing some years later. At the time he was in good spirits but really crippled up badly (we bought a special big comfy chair for him to sit in).
