Dear All:

Road Champs was a manufacturer who offered vehicles in many scales,including 1/87 scale.They offered cars,buses and trucks at that scale.

This would be known mostly with Road Champs corporate name,JRI.Chevrolet Corvette with push motor and it is 1/87 scale.Mine is yellow.

Notice how tall this is,indicating that has the little motor and the model is also known by Road Champs corporate name,JRI.Datsun 280Z.

These were offered with the Tonka name as well.I have the JRI and Tonka versions.

Buses were also made,these being the Flexble Metro Transit bus and Super Eagle Coach.

Super Eagle Coach 'Greyhound'.This model,in real life,is a rarity.On the 1980's,Greyhound were loyal to MCI (Motor Coach Industries) coach - they still are,but in the past they had a variety of coaches on their fleet,including GMC.And Continental Trailways which were acquired by Greyhound in the mid-1980's were loyal to Super Eagle coaches.After Greyhound purchased them,some of the Eagles had the Greyhound livery,but not for very long.

An enormous variety of trucks and liveries were offered.See below:

Their scale in reality would be around 1/90 (not all;some were 1/87 scale) and these could be found at Target and the packages had over a period of time many different denominations,such as 'Anteaters'.

The Winnebago:

I remember adding this to my 1/76 scale vehicle series.

And of course,the fire trucks:

There were a good variety of them,such as this International Pumper from New Orleans.

Do not remember the make.Saint Louis Fire Department.

The Fire Units are 1/64 scale.

No,the Fords are on the 1/87 scale range.I still have to report the 1/87 scale Cadillac,Chrysler and Lincoln and then I will list the 1/64 scale models,again by make.

CT-113 TATA 1313 Public Truck.The box marks this vehicle as Telco.which stands for TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company.It is to be noticed that Indian Railways used steam locomotives up to 1985 and the ones that remained are for heritage railway use only.

TATA started business in 1945 as a manufacturer of locomotives.In 1954 the company started to build commercial vehicles with an agreement from Daimler Benz,which ended in 1969.What one had was a Mercedes Benz truck which did not had the Mercedes star at its grille,but a T from the TATA group on its place.See below:

Norev is basically a 1/43 scale manufacturer but on its history,it did issued vehicles in 1/87 scale and 1/64 scale (the Mini Jet series in the 1980's). Recently,they been issuing what they call the three inch series (the vast majority is made on 1/55 scale) and many interesting vehicles were offered,such as the GM Futurliner (which as of now goes at amazing prices),the Firebird Concepts from the 1950's,the Chrysler 300 (which was made in 1/64 scale),and the one I just got,the Chrysler ME 4.12.Later on,a list on the Mini Jets will be issued as well as the current ones.I got my Mini Jets at a mall in Glendale (only one to have them) or George's show,as they would not appear at Toys R Us or other major stores of the period.I do have their 1/87 scale vehicles as well.

The Mercedes Benz Short Bonnet truck,or L series was manufactured in Germany from 1959 to 1995.See below:

They were manufactured in Brazil and many other countries including Iran.The Brazilians also did modify the front end of this truck in 1982.

It is interesting to notice that Road Champs made a Mercedes Benz L series truck and they chose to reproduce the Brazilian model.The truck is 1/90 scale.

Ah,the little Trabant.

The models:

Maisto Trabant.Around 1/55 scale

Welly Trabant,part of the 1/60 series but it is 1/55 scale.This manufacturer offers this model in several scales and opening features.

Grell Trabant Kubel.1/55 scale.

Sun Star Trabant Station Wagon 1/18 scale.Around 2007,a powered (push back motor) was made around 2007 (made in China item,around 1/36 scale.I assume it was a Sunnyside product).

The Trabant is an automobile that was produced from 1957 to 1990 by former East German auto maker VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau in Zwickau, Saxony.It is the symbol of East Germany and not all of them are gone,as the video shows above.

The name Trabant in German denotes a celestial body such as the moon or other natural satellite.In Slavic,it is equivalent to the word Sputnik,which stands for 'companion'.

Originally,a three-wheel motorcycle was planned.

The first model was the P50,with two stoke engine based on a pre-war DKW design and had a capacity of 31 cubic inches (500 cc) and it was air-cooled.This engine had minor alterations during the life span of the vehicle.Equally,no fuel pump (the fuel was fed by gravity and the tank fuel was above the motor inside the engine bay;in case of an accident,the engine would catch on fire.Equally,as the DKW, no oil pump,so fuel and oil had to added to the fuel pump,at a ratio of 50.1 to 33.1 ratio of fuel to oil.At that period,since most of East European Countries had a majority of two stroke engine vehicles,gas stations had premixed gas/oil mixture at the pump.The engine was capable to generate a good amount of pollution,that being nine times than the European car of 2007.

Unibody construction,independent suspension and the doors were made of a material called Duroplast which is a combination of cotton waste from the USSR and phenol resins from the East Germany dye Industry.A common misconception was that this material was cardboard and it was called the Zwickauer Rennpappe, i.e. "Zwickau racing cardboard".

As it was,the car was quite unique (unibody,front wheel drive and independent suspension) but during its time of construction it basically remained the same and no technical improvements - i.e.,a more modern engine - were not given to it.It was car that would last due do duraplast,an East German symbol and there were other famous Trabants in other countries,including Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia.

The 500 engine started with a rating of 18 horsepower in 1958 and was updated to 20 in 1960 and in the process it would have a fully synchronized gearbox.

The 600 engine was capable of 23 horsepower.In 1989 this engine had a rating of 26 horsepower,capable to reach 62 miles in 21 seconds.Maximum speed,62 miles per hour.

Notice that besides the two-door and wagon,a Jeep type vehicle,the Kubel was added to the line up in 1966,and the Tramp,the civilian version of the Kubel came out in 1978.During the 601 era,many variations were offered,including vehicles for the disabled (automatic tranny) and a racer type which had only 3 models made;two survive.

Volkswagen took over the Trabant complex in 1991.In 1989 there was the Trabant 1.1 with Volkswagen Polo engine and it was sold alongside the two stroke powered one.The Volkswagen plant,as of know,manufactures engines and limited amounts of Volkswagen models.

Of course,the Berlin wall fell and it was felt that,as the Polish Syrena and Warzawa,it was to disappear.Many were abandoned,one could buy this car for a few Deutsche Marks.

But as time passed,and the vehicle was a classic,had some history on other countries (no Western Europe due to the amount of pollution produced) it regained in prices and it is a collector item,used in races (as the video above) - even in North America,as a good amount of these vehicles are being acquired and once a year there are involved on a race.The racers either modify it with new engines and other mechanical components or keep it original.

Herpa (and I have these models) bought the Trabant name and issued,in 1/87 scale,the new trabi models (as of 2007).The electric Trabant nt debuted in 2009,and have a range of 100 miles with one charge.Sponsors,besides Herpa,include parts manufacturer IndiKar and German automobile engineering IAV.Besides,investment,design are needed and the plan was to produce this vehicle in Zwickaw.

Another re-manufacture was attempted in the late 1990's in Uzbekistan as the Olimpus.Ony one model done;if alive this is a very rare unit.

As stated before,Herpa bought the Trabant name and introduced the new Trabi Model,in 1/87 scale.The model below is it:

Herpa New Trabant,the four door version.

This is the real thing,two door and it is the NT electric version.

And I just got this,in 1/64 scale and supposedly made by Herpa.

1/64 scale new Trabant by Herpa? Will see when it arrives.I will get the four door version,too.
