Metalcar, aka Metalcar Metro Co was one of the biggest Hungarian diecast manufacturers in 1980's. They made a variety of good quality but unlicensed Atlas, Hondarora, and Mercedes vans. They had more problems in the first quarter of 1990 with their cheap Chinese diecast imports (?). Due to the growth of Chinese imports, the firm closed their diecast factory (and retooled their machines.) (?)

Along with their own casting designs (?), copies of Matchbox and Siku models were also distributed. On example, the Mercedes 406 only has an M identification on its base. Some models were produced in 1:87 scale.

They may or may not be related to Metalbox who are also from Hungary. If so, Corgi contracted with Metalbox to re-issue Corgi Juniors under the Metalbox brand name.

Both the Metalbox and Metalcar logo resemble the Matchbox logo down to the register mark.
