I need to start learning how to paint figures and need some instructions on how to go about painting faces!

I've got a lot of figures I've got to try to learn to do. There is one technique that's used a lot in figures that make them look like dead clowns in my opinion. WAY too much shading. There are others that paint faces that look real. I'm sure it takes a lot of practice, but I've got to learn the starting point first!
