Is your fuel fresh, older fuel may have trouble starting an engine but once going may keep it running.

Hey Guys,
I have a Husky 254 that will only start after a small shot of starting fluid. Then it runs GREAT. And after it is warmed up, it starts fine until it has been sitting for several hours. Then, it requires ether to start.
I've installed new plug and air filter.
Could the fuel filter be clogged to some extent?
I'd appreciate any ideas.
