How Much Is THAT Gonna Cost Me?

Mornin' I have a Question regarding the Collectibilty of Certin Kits, See ALOT of stuff has been written about AURORA,Pricelists Histories etc and I understand that Building a Kit can certinly Take away from the Value. Okay well I can't afford ANY of the Original Aurora's Hell I can't even afford to pick up Extras of the PL repops (although I've ended up with an Extra Dick Tracy and a Couple of the Beatles) Anyhoo I spend what little I can afford to on Obtaining the Kits that I've Always wanted to Add to my collection. In MOST cases the Models I REALLY want are Long OOP! (my luck) and going for BIG BUCKS on E-place lol So Well I have had some luck (Thanks to you guys here mostly!) I Picked up a Kit I'd never herd of called (pardon my spelling) a Chitillu (?) from Interleg in a Really Messed up Box for $12.00 it was in a little Hobby shop in the Bronx N.Y. I got a few of those Darkhorse Coldcast Kits like The Invisible Man and the Bride of Frank AND a Huge Vinyl Kong for $20 each rather than the $100.00 and up I see everywhere else! Okay well now I'm buying alot of the Old Screamin' Vinyl Kits from my friend Scott, He sells these Beautiful Pieces at a HUGE discount but without the Original Boxes or Instructions (NOT RECASTS) Anyhoo I met up with another Great Guy and True Artist who sold me a Couple of the Screamin' Mars Attacks Kits These are BOXED MINT and get this, after we made our Deal my buddy was hanging out with Artist Jim Groman, turns out he noticed the Mars Attacks Boxes being readied to Ship to me. Well as it turns out Jim was the guy who did ALL THE ART FOR THE KIT!! (This would be the "No Place To Hide" Model) so my Bud got him to Sign the Mars Attacks Card AND the Instructions!! AWSOME but now I still plan to Build it I'm Sorry I'm into this for the Enjoyment of Building NOT the Money I'll Never Part with these (I Sold All my Kits about 10 years ago in order to Drink! what an idiot! and I've been clean for over 5 years now and slowly trying to regain the ones I had)Of course since I got rid of my Kits the price for an Unbuilt Horizon Creature (Black Lagoon) has seemed to TRIPELED! (I think I bought mine From Horizon for about $30.00 in 1995) But I was wondering is there ANY kind of Price guide for Figure Kits besides Aurora? I wonder if having the Artists Signiture makes it more Valuble? Well it is to me! lol but since there's just SOOO Many "Garage Kits" out there I suppose any kind of Comprehensive "Guide Book" is a Futile undertaking huh? It would be Nice to see Something at least about Companies like Geometric,Screamin,Horizon,Billken,Tuskuda, Etc There was that Great Book "Garage Kit That Ate My Wallet" and the Sequel but how about including some Price ranges? Of Course as I've always Herd, it really Boils down to "What Someone is Willing To Pay" I understand that comepletly! but it would be nice to at least have a Jumpping off Point,if you follow my meaning? lol well thanks for reading and I'd like to know your Opinions on this.

john it really comes down to "what the market will bear" or as you say "what someones willing to pay". if there was a price guide i think it would have to be constrained to sub-catagories, like "domestic licensed major manufacturer", cause the GK hobby fluctuates so often.

theres also the thing of crossover genres to be considered. what i mean by that is this: lets say a vinyl star trek character kit is, to modelers, worth 2x. however to the trekkies/trekkers it might be worth only 1x or as much as 10x. by the time the aurora price guide was written, unopened kits had been oop so long that those differences had time to settle down.

this brings an idea to mind. if anybody could write such a price guide, it would be ebay itself. if anybody could analyize the selling prices of these things and come up with an average, it'd be them.

HEY RAZOR, You seem to make PERFECT SENSE to me! Just Wishful thinkin' It would be a hell of an undertakin' That's why I thought it might be a little eaiser if it were kept to Legit Companies (No Offense to our GK Friends!) But if a Priceguide delt w/ only those Vinyl or Resin Kits from Companies like GEO, Horizon,Screamin Maybe just the Offically Licenced Stuff? I dunno but Yeah I think you're Absolutly Right that E-bay would be an ideal place to get an Idea of the Market (Value) Thanks Maybe I'll put something like this together! lol

wow people saying i make sense on these forums is getting scarce these days, thanks. i think what you'd have to do is create it with a listing/review of the kits, then have the price guide as a suppliment that could be updated annually or bi-annually, as the value changes as they get scarser. one thing in your favor is that screamin', horizon, and the original incarnation of geo are now defunct, therefore limiting the number of kits you'd have to review. in realtion to things like the aurora kit price review, really there arent that many domestic vinyl kits out there. you'd also pretty much have to limit it to domestic kits, because including the japanese ones would become the neverending story. let me know if you're going to persue this, id be interested in helping.
