If they do it would be a real bummer, let's hope not. I think it would hurt the sales.

Hopefully never. They can't expect people to pay $3 or $4 per car for a plastic base. If they switched to plastic, well then they'd almost be Hot Wheels.

I disagree.
Folks pay well and above that (3-4 bucks) for plastic base cars. And many of the RC/Ertl cars have just that.

RC Ertl is a publically traded company are they not? And what counts to the shareholders are always higher profits and lower production costs (and materials). I would not be too surprised that the metal base cost claim would be used as an excuse to further raise prices even. But then again I can be cynical...

Plastic bases for JL cars I would expect.
