Hi Guys - new user - old auto mechanic - wannabee small engine guy

Have never changed a starter gear. Bought a used B&S 12 HP to replace on that died. The cable connection nut on the starter is loose and is sparking because the plastic siolator block is cracked.

Anyway my old engine's starter is good but the gearing is diferent (old one has coarser gear (16 teeth vs 17). How do I swap our gears?

Looks like a little locking ring clamp that I can push off with a screwdriver, then just swap it out.

you got it take the ring off and replace

A word of warning. That locking ring is spring steel. Be careful it doesn't come flying off and go across the room,never to be found again. It's a bit of a trick getting it back on,too. But if you're an old mech,you'll figure it out. :>)
