Hey, im trying to build roman style armor, im pretty good with tools, i have tons, but i have not done much metal work before. i cant post links yet, but if you google roman armor, the one made of pieces of overlapping metal strips and i was wondering mainly, how would i reliably shape the metal? how thick should it be? should i go to a metal shop for help? any advise would me very useful. thanks everyone!

depending on the Armour, is is "sheet" metal? A good pair of tinm snips would go a long ways, and even so, you can use normal pliers to bend it (if your not looking for dead-on precision)...
