Located in Peosta, Iowa, First Gear was known for making large scale cars, trucks, fire engines, tow trucks, commercial and construction equipment. Model brands of Ford, Freightliner, International, Mack, and other semi truck models are known.

In 2002, they made a 1940s Ford coupe in 1:64 scale for Carquest Auto Parts as a Christmas promotional item called "Diecast Metal Street Rod". A planned series of (4) vehicles in total never made production. The casting was made in China, by an unnamed maker.

In 2003, the Ford Coupe was issued again for Tech-Net Professional Auto Service faciities. They are a subsidiary of Carquest.

In the mid 2000s, a 1949 Mercury "Lead Sled" model was also issued.
