So the wife and I were out shopping the other night, and I headed over to the HW rack and spotted a yellow DD and grabbed it, and when I got back to the wife, she just looked at it and said "what are you doing???.... you bought one of those the other day....."

So the question is..... can a HW customizer have too many Dairys?

When I buy castings for Customizing I buy them by the hundreds.
Beginning back around 2000 I purchased over 500 Jada '57 Suburbans.
That set the ball rolling for quantity purchases.

I don't go out and hit the pegs so I put out requests to friends around Houston and elsewhere around the country to pick up all they see of specific castings.
This has resulted in multiple cases of the same casting and some very lasting friendships.
If I need something for a 100 to 500 Custom project I can easily look through inventory to pick just the right casting.

I have more than 400 Dairys, 100 bought in a single pop, but the numbers of Jada Divcos, or COE Box Trucks each more than doubles that count,

The castings I choose must meet certain criteria requirements for Customizing into Promotional Customs.

Variations don't mean a thing to me because everything purchased is destined for the Stripper.

Besides the Dairy Delivery's my friends have helped me set aside more than 200 each of,

HW SuperBird 300+,
58 T-Bird
47 Chevy
66 Nova
70 Nova
Fat Fender 40 300+
TailDragger 300+
40 Ford Coupe
MBox Hearse 300+
MBox Mini Cooper Van 300+
70 Chevelle
69 Chevelle
69 GTO 300+
70 GTO
59 Caddy 300+
Scorchin' Scooter 300+
64 Lincoln Convertible

69 Camaro Convertible 160 so far
69 Camaro Convertible Classics 114 so far

69 Camaro Hardtop boxes arriving this weekend should total more than 200

These are all just off the top of my head,

In my case too much is never enough.

It's a quick "click" and it's totally painless:thumbsup:
I have a few DDs, but as a casting it never tripped my trigger as far as customizing goes. It seems that everyone is doing them. I tend to work with the non belly button castings that other customizers tend to neglect.
I'm afraid I must vote absentee since I don't own a DD nor will I probally ever own one. They just don't do anything for me if the truth be told. I do apreciate the high level of skill that many put into them though. To me they are more of a fantasy ride so I leave them to the fantasy (sureal) builders out there. I consider myself more of a scratch builder and or replicator rather than a fantasy builder. Two different schools of thought working in the same medium is all.
... wellll ...

Well, I voted the second choice, Thorr.

Ya know, 'CaddyPat', 'camarors, and 'grayhouse'
each have a good point. I'll offer this ... it depends.

If you're producing large-volume high-end creations
such as Pat, then as many as is needed works well. If
he finds he has extras (if someone else needs one) then
he luckily has good trading (or ROAK) material on hand. He
opens up a new project, chooses the DD as its subject, and
has a built-in receptive 'audience' ... those who love the casting
nicley customized. That means he most likely has a success as well.
Because ALL recognize such quality workmanship on their favored castings.

'camarors and 'grayhouse' may not favor the casting. It
may have been way-over done already. It may be a finicky
casting to work with when taking it up to the level of an exotic
kuztomz piece. Yet they both recognize that others do value DDs.
So they pay attention to it, yet might not choose one for themselves.

'grayhouse' has another fine point ... that of scratch-building. The
casting seems to have enough physical mass for cut-n-section parts.
Thus, many of the replicate-masters (such as he) might use part of it
to then create a unique new 'prototype'. As he said, different schools of
thought. A greatly diverse hobby we can all share. So have fun, and get
the DDs that you are guided to acquire. To keep, or share. Your choice.

yes, you can have too many... then again, it makes the "stock" ones and "official" hot wheels ones more rare...
I love the casting. I don't care who's responsible for its final look. I think customizers make a great casting even greater. Keep them coming!!
I understand that the casting offers more surface than usual for customizing and that is fine. My personal opinion, and this is in no way intended to downgrade those customs, is that it's been done too many times and it's starting to get repetitive. I have two of them (They came with a lot) and they are just sitting in storage. I would put the Dragbus in the same category. I've never had one cross my hands since they can only be bought on the secondary market here and the prices are just insane. This and the fact that it's been done over and over would not make any kind of blip on my customizing radar.

Cool thread Thorrr, I feel that this discussion was overdue. For those who might feel irritated about my comment, take comfort that my Mother always told me to shut up and I didn't listen to her either.

Peace

Gerry :)
