Hey guys,

I'm moving out of my dad's house here in the next week, and he's selling the house here soon(hopefully). I can't take really any of my collection with me aside from a few small displays. He's going to be getting a storage unit for the things he doesn't/can't take with to wherever he moves in to..whether and apartment or condo...and said I'm more than welcome to drag all my crap there.

He asked if any of the cardboard cards or boxes will be affected by extreme hot/cold weather that IL seems to have every year, and I had no clue really.

Would the cardboard cards/boxes warp or get damaged by sitting in IL winter/summer weather? Or would it be best to get something climate controlled?

Anything plastic, will warp or crack under extreme heat if left for a long time...(it happen to me before espeacially JLs) I had car with Plastic hard tops, chassis in boxes that either got warp or melted and same with some of my GL cars that was made with Plastic top.....Climate controlled Storage is the way to go my opinion.....Good luck on yr move....

I live in California and have never had any problems with the climate out here " But " I bought a patial collection of RC Cars from a Seller 3 years ago in your area IL State and this is what I recieved.... I did manage to get my money back as the Seller tried to play dumb in not knowing anything was wrong with his collection.

This collection was stored away and this is how 75% of the Cars looked when I recieved them.

You may want to think twice before storing your collection where you live as I had to toss over 3/4 of that collection as the Cars literally fell apart in my hands.... Doors, Hoods fell off - Tires were split - Windshields faded... You get the idea as my pictures explain what will happen.

Wow! Is that the metal actually cracking on that car? I thought it was cracks in the paint at first, but from what you are saying it sounds like it was in the metal?

I have not had anything ever survive well while in storage, regardless of where I lived. I live in California, too, and stored some stuff for a couple of years in a storage unit - including some old treasured books I got from my Mom that she had when she was a child (some original Lone Ranger books, an original Call of the Wild by Jack London and an original Bambi from 1928. The books suffered some damage from being in storage. Fortunately, it was none of the books mentioned above, it was mostly a few books that were nearest the floor, but I will never put them in storage again. I don't think anything survives well when it is stacked on top of itself several times over and left that way for any length of time. Just mho, but based somewhat on my own personal experience, for what it is worth.

How to store, it's a real quandary, whether you're a cardboard collector or an opener. I store the vast majority of my cars - which are loose, in zip lock baggies piled into small shopping bags, which are kept in bins. It seems to work alright, but weight stress is a concern. I try to distribute weight best I can, I've come across a bent axle before once or twice. I would agree with Duncan about what happens when storing anything on top of itself for long periods.

Fortunately, even though I live in Florida, I've never had to find out just how sensitive diecast is to extreme temps and humidity. But if you can get a climate controlled unit, by all means do so. Your carded collection won't be the only thing that thanks you later.

I have a black C5 Corvette from RC that did the exact same thing, yet all the other ones were fine. Always thought that was odd, that car literally fell apart one day out of the blue. Hood separated from the hinge, glass came off the top of the roof, base separated from the car...so weird

Thanks for the responses guys!!

I kinda figured heat would do the most damage to everything. Most of my stuff is in Rubbermaid tubs already, but some are in cardboard boxes. So that'll definitely have to change.

I do have time to figure it out, I'm moving out this weekend and my dad is whenever the house sells(eek)

I think everything in this thread is my main reason for keeping my collection tight. If I run out of display space or storage boxes, something has to go. That means if I find a great car I really want, it has to take the place of a car I can do without. This car will then go to a friend's son or any other kid to play with (talking HW and MBX). 1/18 and 1/43 are a different area and I won't buy more than one or two a year of those for storage reasons. I think my biggest headache at the moment is shelf space for my Sikus.

MBX and HW mainlines can be stored in this:
