Weather is crappy here so I took the time to clean my recent aquisition Porsche T-Jet.

Before:

It did run when tested, only hummed. The corrosion looks typical of T-Jets stored in the original cases with the foam. BE AWARE!! - THE FOAM RETAINS MOISTURE!! While it looks cool to have the original packaging, it is harmful to the cars.

I disassemble the car and set the body aside. I lay the magnets next to the body the same way they came out of the car. The tray I use I got at a garage sale for $.25. Works great!

I put the the parts in a clean butter container. Today I used Awesome Orange, use your own favorite cleaner. Some people use ultrasonic cleaners also.

After soaking for a little while I use an old toothbrush to scrub any stubborn crude. RINSE THOROUGHLY! DRY COMPLETLY!

Looks better already.

Sorry. The previous post was afte I used Tarn-X on the copper parts.

Here is right after the cleaning solution bath:

Then I take a Dremel with a wire brush, stainless steel or brass, to the coppper parts. WEAR EYE PROTECTION!!

Looks really good now!

Looking Great there Marty, I was just gonna ask just how did all the copper get so shiney... Thanks for the pics.

Lubricate in all the right places with your favorite lubrication, assemble and test.

I also cleaned the body in a mild soap solution. The decals came off easily. The body is clean enough I did not feel the need to polish it.

The motor runs now, but is very weak. If I decide to run it at all I will adjust brush tension, pick-up shoe tension and probably have to change magnets.

Yup bare foam's a bugger on copper. Not only does it attract moisture, but there is a certain amount of out gassing as it ages/decays.

Try modern automotive headliner material available at any good upholstery shop. It has the correct width foam on one side and a very soft synthetic cloth liner on the other. I use it cloth side up. It's like the stay dry liner in your rugger's "Pampers". I've been using black as I find it stylish and practical. It doesnt show the inevitable grease spots and tire smudges.
