I recently ordered one of AMT's reissued Drag-U-La kits online. It arrived today, and when I opened the box to inspect the contents I found it included a card that explained I had received a "Kat Kit", i.e. a chase kit molded in a special color of styrene (in this case a dark gold with gold flakes). I even found this website explaining it.

Now, I'm not new to the concept of chase kits. And I've never purchased a kit with the intention of not building it, so I couldn't care less about chase kits. But it got me thinking that somewhere out there is a modeler or collector who would go out of their way to obtain one of these kits.

So here's my question: Do any of you have a preference for chase kits in any way? I'm just curious.

Nope. Me no care. I buy to build.

Same with the comic/magazine industry and their multiple alternate covers for the same issue. Just a sales ploy, and I ain't fallin' for it.

No, I've never gone after a chase edition of a kit and if I found I'd obtained one unintentionally and had been intending to build it, I'd still build it.

Back when there was quite a bit of discussion here on the Board about PL's chase kits, what surprised me was that the chase edition was often in plain white plastic, the same as a standard kit from any other manufacturer. Modellers were expected to collect and keep a chase edition of the kit in the most uninteresting colour of all; I always thought that the chase edition should be in an unusual and appealing colour of plastic.

For the most part I don't care about them. I'd have been happy to get a gold Dragula since thats what the original kit was molded in. But, for the most part, its not a huge deal. I never found most of them to be "rare" either.

To some model collector's, these will have value when the production for that particular kit run ends. I am a toy collector and "chase" figures are always worth more on the collector market. You just ended up with a rare run of this kit. I'd save it. Put it away. Buy another one, and build that.

But, I'm a toy collector and that's how I treat "chase" figures.

I might have been happier if they'd done these chase kits in that same shade of gold, but this is a really dark gold with gold flakes in it (like glitter). I think it's a pretty hideous shade of gold, actually...not that I care; it won't matter after I've painted it. :dude:

First, buying another one isn't in my budget (disability sucks). Second, I already have more kits in my stash than I'll be able to build before I die; I don't want to start adding kits that I don't intend to build. But I understand and appreciate your perspective.

As it is, I already have one of the original Drag-U-La kits that I got through evilBay several years ago. It was supposed to be complete except for the instructions, but it was also missing a few parts that would be nearly impossible for me to replicate (the top of the intake scoops, for example). I thought of building that kit with parts taken from the reissued kit, but then I'd have a "rare/collectible" chase kit with parts missing, which defeats the purpose of setting it aside.
