Does anyone know what the deal is with Bulgarian Matchbox? There seem to be an awful lot of them of all sizes, usually minty, different colors, and pricy. Are they bootlegs or did someone there really license and crank out a ton of them which all seem to have been squirreled away unless they were made in teh last 10 years from old castings.

They have been made for the last couple decades in Bulgaria from old molds. They seem to make them in any color of paint and plastic they can find. It is impossible to get them all. I think they make them in different colors daily.

I heard they might have finally shut down the factory last year. I do not know for sure. I have a couple hundred. I know of the collector that has over 10,000 variations. Remember this is from only about 12 models. :freak:

I have seen many Javelins but they are way too pricey for me. Like Tom said, their are too many variations.

Wow that's just bonkers. I first started seeing them when I was looking for the Speedkings Rally 240Z. There were more Bulgarian ones than non for most of the time I was looking and watching for a deal. Since then I have seen lots of them, but only for certain models. If they only had a few molds, that makes sense.

Seriously? 1960s Lesneys like the #46 Benz and the #41 GT40 were still made until recently?

This site is really helpful. Bulgarians have been made since the 1980s. The more valuable models are the first three series made. You can tell my the packaging shown in this site. I dont buy any after 1992.
