Action Performance Companies Inc was founded by Fred Wagenhals in 1992. They were located in Phoenix, Arizona, with an operations office in Charlotte, North Carolina. Action themselves sourced their NASCAR models from Deles and Early Light in China. Their "Platinum" series were available to non club members and the "Open Hood" models were made exclusively for RCCA club members.

Action also purchased the "Winners Circle" band from Hasbro with which they had already held a joint licensing agreement with - to NASCAR.

They also aquired Racing Collectables Inc and their "Collector's Series" and "Legend Series" in the early 2000s.

In 2003, they purchased Funline and their "Muscle Machines" brand of diecast.

In 2005, Action was purchased by the NASCAR conglomerat Motorsport Authentics from nearby Tempe, Arizona. Motorsports Authentics, is operated by a joint venture between International Speedway Corporation (ISC) and Speedway Motorsports Incorporated (SMI) and form Motorspots Authentics from the combined assets of Action Performance Companies Inc and Team Caliber.
