A question on the "Classics"

And it's probably a stupid question and been asked before (but I missed it). :)

Why in the world are these so much more than the regular mainline cars? Is it the Spectraflame paint? The only ones I collect are the bikes, and any of the funny cars, so I'm not shelling out a ton of money to buy them all. After reading Midnightrun's thread and seeing prices of $2.99 to 3.99, and that's pretty much what I've paid, it just made me wonder why such a big difference.

Spectraflame paint (which can't be that much more I'm thinking) and hype. That's all. Retail prices are closing in on $4, except at a few grocery stores and discounters, and of course Macs still has some for $3.25.
Cause people pay that much for them. Why should they charge $2 if people will pay twice as much?

Exactly! as long as people continue to pay the rediculous prices for these cars, they will continue to charge them. I stopped collecting the Classics after series one just for this reason.
If it is any consolation, the "classics" do have metal base plates, which many toys no longer have, Jada and Johnny Lightning excluded.

Good point. Not sure it makes it worth the $2-$3 surcharge, but it's definitely worth a little bit more.
Ya I should have waited for those Classics to go down to 2 dollars and somethin... The manager of the toy section at Wal Mart said that the prices will eventually go down.... Anyways I think I am done with classics.. I only collect some of the bikes, Mach ones, and the Cobras.... I only have one Ultra Hot.. Thats a very rare buy for me... The Mainlines is where its all at...

Over the past couple of weeks the local Target and WM stores have had almost pull pegs of the Classics, and with the exception of one WM restocking Saturday, they've had next to no mainlines.

I'll keep buying the Bikes and Funny Cars as long as I can find one of each color, but those are the only ones.
WMs here almost never get in Classics. One of the 4 local stores has had them and maybe a couple cases in the past year. Pitiful.

Point taken, and I do think that makes them more valuable to collectors. Not because the metal is literally worth more than the plastic, but because it's more desireable. If metal bases were cheaper than plastic ones, would you still want metal? I think so, I know I would.

My whole point is that the cost to Mattel doens't really matter as much as how much they think it's worth to us.
With Series 1 I was trying to collect one of each in every color, but it got a little ridiculous and I've bought VERY few Series 2. But I stopped at a Walmart on the road Monday night and they had Series 3 ... and I started drooling. The Bone Shaker, the Roger Dodger, the Passion, and a couple of others jumped into my arms and left with me ....
while going through a few boxes of Classics,I was amazed on the amount I've bought so far.
The quality of the finish is really crap,on a large majority of them
At 3-4 bucks a pop,all I can do now, is shake my head in disbelief.

This year will be quite different, Mattel........
