Camaro question

I picked up a 1992 Camaro RS (white) last night from the Camaro SS Anniversary series. Checked my list (twice!) before buying, wasn't on there, I'm happy, away we go. Get home, notice that it bears a striking resemblance to the red 1982 Camaro Z/28 I got from the Motor Trend Car of the Year series. On further review, they are completely identical. What's up with that?? Shouldn't there be a difference between cars made 10 years apart??
Camaro guys, any thoughts?

That particular body style went from 1982 through 1992. The front end and tail lights had some detail differences, and the Z-28 had a taller spoiler in the later years. The IROC also had louvered hood inserts.

There probably should be, but in the interest of costs, there isn't. I believe the same casting is used for 1982 to 1992 Camaros, and another one is used for 1993 to 2002 Camaros.

There are 2 different castings for the 1993-2002. One goes from 1993-1997, and was originally used as an American Blue car, the other from 1998-2002, which also has t-tops, convertible, and hardtop versions, as well as a regular hood and an SS hood.

Thanks for the clarification! Chalk up a "half right" for me. Not much versatility for the '82-'92 casting, eh?

82-92 third generation Camaro, Very similiar slight bumper and light variations, 82 Z-28 came from the factory with a fiberglass hood. Some other hood, and trim variations, GM didn't recast it, I don't think JL has to either?

Yeah it sucks that JL used the same casting for all 82-92 Camaros. They even did the IROC door decal placement WRONG for the collector series.
Some 3rdgen Camaro highlights bodywise:
82-83Z28s fiberglass hood,'84 didn't get one.
'84-86 some Berlinettas had the digital dash
'85 IROC intro,was a suspension quirk to the Z28s plus the decals,new front nose,hood w/louvers,new ground efx,new grid tail lights,16" IROC wheels
'87 LT coupes replaced berlinettas
'87 The convertible returned, absent since the 1stgen years.
'88 Z28 went away,IROC became its' own model
'88 sport coupes(which replaced berlinettas/LT)had Z28 bodystyle, had 3rdgen Firebird style spoiler(one year thing though sold 1st half of year went to 3piece spoiler later on)
'88 door IROC-Z decals were moved to back part of door
'90 IROC production ended early{late 89}(due to contract w/ racing series ending) so only 3k+ IROCs were made, revised dash gauges
'91 z28 returns early '90 with revised ground efx,high rise rear spoiler,and some Z28s w/350s got the IROC wonder bar(suspension piece,mine did )
'92 Camaro's 25th Anniversary all got anniversary badges(hood, dash, rear declid)Heritage editions got racing stripes on hood and rear deck lid,on spoiler for Z28s.There were additional colors added polo green and purple haze.
....brief 3rd gen history lesson ended for today

Since I collect only 67-68-69 Camaro's, does anyone have a 1st generation article for me?

Thanks for all the info, luckily both cars are pretty sharp so I don't mind having multiples!

I have three fantastic books on camaros - 67-69, just the 69 and 70-73 - all written by our very own John Hooper.... very informative and actually fun to read....... even if they are about Camaros and not Firebirds
