Question Danbury and Franklin Mint Cars

What's the best way to sell a collection of cars from the Danbury and Franklin Mints? My friends have about 40 or so cars that belonged to their son who passed away and they are interested in selling them. They'd like to sell them all together if possible. How can we find out what they are worth so they know what they could get for them and then where/how do they sell them?
I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Diane

Diane,

Those are way past my price range to collect, but I can tell you that they will receive a lot more for them if they piece them out individual or in small groups. Selling as a large lot will generally only net about 25-50% of the total of individual value.

As for avenues, there is this board of course. There is also a site called The Toy Peddler that deals mostly in die-cast. But for those high-dollar vehicles, eBay may be the best option. It's certainly the best place to go to get an estimate on value. There's also craigslist if they do want to sell them as a lot. That way someone local can pick them up if they buy them.

Hope this helps.

Diane,

Good advice from 72challenger. Please take into consideration the current state of the economy.
A few years back, I was in a phase of collecting Franklin and Danbury Mint vehicles. There are some pieces that have appreciated in value from their original MSRP of $120 and some that still command close to MSRP. But there are also pieces that have depreciated markedly.
Factors to be mindful of are: condition ~ (please be completely honest when describing, noting any flaws, scratches, chips, cracks, etc.)
packaging ~ original box, styrofoam insert, accessories, hang tag (Franklin Mint), title (Danbury Mint), other documents.
Has the piece been displayed? If so, out in the open or in a sealed display? (dust is the enemy!)
I have bought loose (no box) FM and DM cars and I've bought mint, boxed cars. It is sometimes about availability (rarity) of a piece and price is also a factor, of course.
Do some pricing research by looking on ebay. Check for as many examples of each piece you have so you will get a range.
In closing, I would be interested to see a list of the models you have. Just click on my HT name and the drop down box will offer the option to send me a personal message (PM) or you can email me. Thank you.
I hope this information is helpful. Good luck!
- Mark

Smile Thanks so much!

Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. It gives me a place to start.
I will get a list of what they have and find out about condition, etc.
