Thought you guys might like to see this. I found it in an old comic book from 1971.

And just in case you're too young to remember Sizzlers...here's an ad from the back of the same comic.

I even found an SSP ad. My brother and I had these too. I think we used to get them ever Christmas for a while. They were pretty popular for a few years.

And here's an add that has nothing to do with cars, but I was cracking up reading it. It's just speaks so much of that period in time.

Love those old ads. I had the Johnny Lightning 500 set when I was a kid, and I had a blast with it. I have one of the originals in the garage, and I also have the PM reissue of the second 500 set. I had that one set up in the basement last month so my kids could run it for a while.
I also was big on SSPs, and I have 8 or 10 of those displayed in the basement right now, including a couple of the smaller ones that came from Esso stations.

SSPs!!!!!
I still have my SSP Smash-Up Derby set with a '57 Ford and a '57 Nomad. The rip-cords are long gone sadly.
I'd love to find some others, those where a *>BLaSt<*!

I had the smash up derby, plus maybe 6 or so other SSps between me and my brother. I remember that some cereal or other once had little SSP type cars for a prize. I don't recall if they were stamped with the brand name, or just a similar car with a little rip cord.

We had the Sizzlers track and a few cars. The gas pump charger had a metal tip that plugged into the side of the car...sort of looked like a headphones jack...and after a few minutes they were ready to roll.

Never had the Lightning 500, but I have the PM reissue. We did have a HWs raceway that was a lot like the Lightning 500...though I think a bit of a simpler layout. And of course, if you pulled the lever really hard it was like a rocket launcher that blasted the cars across the room...LOL!
