I was in a hobby store in town yesterday and my jaw literally hit the floor. The prices for JL's and Greenlights were Ridiculous!
JL's were Classic Gold Rel. 26 and others from around this time and were priced at $9.99.
The Greenlights were the new Black Bandit series and an older muscle car release and the tag on them were $19.99. Some were orange tagged at $12.99 - still not worth it.
Those prices would even make me think twice if there was a chase piece among them.
This has got to be a huge deterrent to collectors. I can understand why the pegs were still full.
Anyone else seen any blown out of whack prices?
My local Hobby Shop is about $1-2 more then the big box stores, I don't find that to bad, but the prices your listing would make me shake my head and walk away.

The local hobby shops around here will be $2 or so more than Wal-Mart, but I don't mind paying it to support the local economy and see some of my friends.
However, I can't justify paying $12 for a car for the same purpose.
You might mention to the owners that their prices are crazy. They probably already know this, but might be able to give you some reason as to why they are charging what they are. It might not be for the reason you think.
Wow! That's nuts! My hobby shop has them priced at about a buck over Big Box stores - well, all except for a set of first release Retro Rods that are priced $7.00 each.
When out of town, I periodically stop into a hobby shop that does sell JL diecast.
They usually have castings from series and releases that never show up in the Walmart stores in Canada.
Their retail prices are $6.99 for Precision castings and usually $7.99 for Icon castings.
The Gold Series castings usually sell for $9.99.
The prices may seem a little high but I sometimes get to buy castings that I really want and will never see on a peg otherwise.
Usually I pick up somewhere between 6 and 10 castings on each visit.
Last trip it was 8 JLs that I took home with me.
From the point of view of cost and finding castings on the pegs and actually seeing and holding them in my hand versus buying these castings out of the U.S. sight unseen; I wouldn't complain about picking them up in the hobby shop.
He turns over his stock making room for new product.
That works for me plus I am supporting the little guy.
To buy these castings out of the U.S. when you add on the exchange and shipping probably evens out either way.
As far as finding Greenlight castings that is another story.
Does Greenlight even sell any product to any retailer large or small in Canada?

I know WalMart had the one release, but haven't seen any of the new ones up here since. The hobby shop I was in actually had 1:24 Greenlights which is the first I have seen in Canada. I forgot to check the price on them though.
Cobra, I think James had mentioned on the Garage or Wyatt's site that WM of Canada did have some older GLs on the pegs but nothing new in like the last year or so.
I wouldn't complain about picking them up in the hobby store...

I have learned that the "little guy" is often times far more greedy than the evil big box store. Don't complian? So at what point do you say no? Or is having to have it trump common sense? I saw some of the 40th cars at a toy show two weeks ago - a couple sellers "little guys" had marked them up between 6-8 bucks each! I had no problem walking away.
Personally I say the heck with them - I can wait. One saving grace of a bad economy regarding diecast collecting is that the "little guy" who gauges his customers often finds himself with his wares on the buyers market side of the table.
It is all about patience.

Our Hobby Lobby stores here overcharge way out of whack too. For what they want I'd rather buy a redline. Michaels overcharge on their model cars too which is why they aren't open any more.
