****2007/2008 BRL Rules****

2007-2008 BRL Rules Updated 10/01/07


Section 1 - General Rules

1.1 ) Rules apply to classes within the BRL and are intended to provide guidelines for fair competition. In the event a rule is not covered in this package the BRL will have the right to adjust or amend rules at any time.

1.2 ) Rules may be revised on an as needed bases

1.3 ) No Person attending a BRL event will have any claim for damages, expenses, lawsuits, or otherwise against a promoter, track operator, BRL, it’s officials, agents, or employees, resulting from any damage to any car, personal injury, on monetary loss of any kind whatsoever. All attendants waive any claim they any have against a promoter, track operator, or the BRL, when they participate in any event being run under these rules.

1.4) It is the drivers responsibility to be in compliance with all BRL rules and regulations. Failure to do so may result in penalties or race disqualification.

1.5 ) The intention for the BRL is to promote racing in a fun, family oriented atmosphere. Unsportsmanlike behavior WILL NOT be tolerated. BRL staff and track management reserves the right to levy penalties or may disqualify a driver for any of the following replacements.
- Excessive foul language
- Drinking of alcoholic beverages or use of illegal substances
- Verbal or physical abuse of a race official or fellow competitor
- Rough driving or intentional hacking of a competitor
- Intentionally circumventing the rules
- Actions detrimental to the BRL or participating tracks
- Not following the commands of a race official

1.6 ) Race director reserves the right to “black flag” any driver who’s car is operating in a reckless or uncontrolled manor, or that may constitute a hazard to other drivers in the race.

1.7 ) Race directors decision if final regarding penalty or scoring disputes.

1.8 ) For your safety drivers are required to ware closed towed shoes at all times while in the racing area.

1.9 ) Safety of our racers is of utmost concern. In the event of hazardous winter weather conditions a race event may be shortened and or cancelled. Shortened event will be considered complete after 2 rounds of qualifying. Cancelled race may be made up at the next available time

1.10 ) Drivers are required to turn marshal the race immediately following their own. Failure to do so will result in the loss of laps off their best qualifying time. If for some reason not able to turn martial it is the drivers responsibility to find another entered driver as a replacement. The replacement martial most notify the race director. The original driver is responsible for the actions of the substitute martial.
1.11 ) Turn marshals are not allowed to repair race cars.

1.12 ) Marshaled cars should be returned to the point they left the racing surface.

1.13 ) Drivers that enter the 10.5 or Open Mod class at any BRL event may not compete in the 17.5 class. Drivers entered in the 17.5 class may not compete in the 10.5 or Open mod class at the same event.



Section 2 - General Chassis Specifications

2.1 ) Car Specifications

Section 3 - General Body Rules

3.1 ) Bodies used in the BRL are to resemble full sized NASCAR style stock cars and trucks.

3.2 ) All bodies used must be on the BRL approved body list.

3.3 ) To be approved new bodies must be submitted to the BRL. Bodies may be submitted throughout the season but must be available through distribution channels for a minimum of 30 days.

3.4 ) Bodies should be neatly finished, painted and or trimmed. All windows (front, rear, sides and quarters) must remain clear. No objectionable or suggestive art, decals, or letter will be permitted.

3.5 ) All car are required to run car numbers on the roof and both doors. Door number must be between the A and C pillars of the body. Numbers must be easily identifiable and MUST have a contrasting outline.

3.6 ) Numbers may be up to three numerical digits or a combination of numeric number(s) followed by a letter. (Example 15B) Numbers are to be a minimum of 1.75" tall for a single digit and 1.5" tall for two or three digit numbers. Letter should be no larger than .75". (The number 1 is only available for the previous years class champion)

3.7) Wheel cut-outs: Maximum .5" over the tire diameter.

3.8.) Body should have know sharp edges, corners must be rounded. Fender flares are not allowed.

3.9) Holes may be drilled in the body for the purpose of mounting the body, wing, or transponder. Holes or material removal from the main body surface area for any other reason is prohibited.

3.10 ) Spoilers & Wings

3.10-1 ) Only single element rear wings allowed

3.10-2 ) Wings may be mounted to or through the rear window of the body or attached to the deck lid.

3.10-3 ) Wing Chord or side dams may be no closer then .25" to the rear deck lid.

3.10-4 ) Wing chord may not extend past the rear spoiler. Side dames make extend behind the spoiler but no more the 1".

17.5 Sportsman Stock / 13.5 Super Stock
3.11-1 ) Rear of the body must remain intact. (No cutouts). The rear of the body may not be cut any higher then the manufacturers molded cut line at the bottom of the rear bumper cover.

3.11-2 ) If a body does not have a bumper or manufactures cut line molded into the back the rear of the body may not be cut out any higher than 2" from the top of the deck lid.

3.11-3 ) No wings allowed, spoiler only. Maximum blade length .75" measured form the back edge of the rear deck lid. (Note: Molded spoiler lips are to be included as part of the spoiler blade measurement.)

3.11-4 ) Minimum height 4.25"


13.5 Masters Truck
3.11-5 ) Rear of the body must remain intact. (No cutouts). The rear of the body may not be cut any higher then the manufacturers molded cut line at the bottom of the rear bumper cover.

3.11-6 ) No wings allowed, spoiler only. Maximum blade length .75" measured form the back edge of the rear deck lid.

Section 4 - Battery Rules

4.1 ) Batteries are to be sub-C sized NiMh rechargeable cells rated at 1.2 volts or less and are intended for R/C model car use.

4.2 ) Dimensions
Diameter: Maximum 23mm, Minimum 21.5mm
Length: Maximum 43mm Minimum 41.5mm (Maximum does not include center positive button, total overall length after charging or conditioning not to exceed 44mm.

4.3 ) All cells must be BRL approved.

Section 5 - General Brushless Motor Specifications

5.1 ) Sensored or sensorless motors are allowed unless specified by class rules.

5.2 ) The motor has to be rebuildable. Ball bearings are allowed.

5.3 ) If the motor is sensored:
It must use a six position JST ZH connector model number ZHR-6 or equivalent
connector with 6 JST part number SZH-002T-PO.5 26-28 awg contacts or equivalent.
Wire sequence must be as follows:
Pin #1- Black wire-ground potential
Pin #2- Orange wire-phase C
Pin #3- White wire-phase B
Pin #4- Green wire-phase A
Pin #5- Blue wire-temp control, 10 k Thermistor referenced to ground potential
Pin #6- Red wire-+ 5.0 volts =/- 10%

For clarification pin #1 is on the left hand side of the above connector with the wires
exiting the top of the connector and the plastic tangs that hold the contacts in the
housing are facing forward.
5.4 ) Compatible sensored speed controls must use the six position JST header part number X-6B-ZRSMX-
TK (where the X denotes the style of the header), or equivalent.
The power connector has to be clearly marked A, B, C. on both speed control and motor.
A for phase A
B for phase B
C for phase C

5.5 ) Can
Overall maximum diameter is 36.02mm measured at whatever point yields the
maximum dimension, excluding solder tabs or lead wires. Overall minimum diameter is 34.00mm measured at whatever point yields the minimum dimension, excluding solder tabs or lead wires. Maximum length is 53.00mm measured from the mounting face of the motor to the furthest most point of the end bell, not including solder tabs, lead wires or original manufacturer’s logo or name. Minimum length is 50.00mm measured from the mounting face of the motor to the furthest most point of the end bell, not including solder
tabs, lead wires or original manufacturer’s logo or name. Motor mounting holes must be on 1.00- inch (25.40mm) centers.

5.6 ) Stack/Stator
Stack minimum length 19.30mm, maximum 21.00mm. Stack inside diameter minimum 12.50mm, maximum 16.00mm. If a stack is used then it must be continuous. The laminations have to be one after the other without anything in between. The thickness of the stack plates is 0.35 +/- 0.05mm. All laminations must be of the same material.

5.7 ) Winding
Only three slot (phase) “Y” wound stators are permitted. No delta wound stators allowed. Only circular (round) pure copper wire permitted. No turn limit.

5.8 ) Rotor
Shaft diameter must be 0.125 inches (3.175mm). Only one piece, two pole Neodymium or Ferrite magnetic rotors are permitted. Magnet minimum length 23.00mm, maximum 27.00mm. Magnet minimum diameter 12.00mm, maximum 15.50mm.

5.9 ) All motors must have the original manufacturer’s logo or name molded into the end bell.

5.10 ) Motors must be available thru major distribution channels for a minimum of 60 days prior to being legal for BRL competition.

5.11 ) No hybrids allowed. (mixing of parts from approved brushless motors unless otherwise specified)

5.12 ) The maximum retail price of a modified brushless motor shall be $129.00

5.13 ) Motors may inspected or torn down at the race directors digression.


5.14 ) Class Specific Brushless Motor Rules

5.16 ) Approved motors may NOT have any material removed from the can, endbell, coil winding stacks, or any other motor component. This includes the purple aluminum "Center Band".

5.16–1) Sensor board must remain mounted in the stock location. No modifications or tampering with the sensor assembly is permitted.

5.16-2) A single hole may be drilled in the plastic end cap for the purpose of oiling the rear bearing, the hole may be no larger then 3/8".

5.16-3) Bearings may be replaced with steel or ceramic version of the same size.

5.16-4) Timing adjustments to the motor is allowed. You may only do so by loosening the three endell screws and rotating the colored timing ring. The timing hash mark closest to the PCB board may not be rotated past the edge of the PCB tab. The full hash mark must be visible.

5.16-5) The use of freeze spray or motor cooling devices is prohibited. Motor must be within 10 degrees Fahrenheit of ambient room temperature during pre-race tech.

5.17 ) Open Pro Modified
Modified is open to all brushless motor manufactures providing they comply to Section 5 of the BRL rule book General Motor Specifications.



Section 6 - General Electronic Speed Control Rules

The BRL views Electronic Speed Controls (ESC) as an impact item. Although we encourage new manufactures to get involved the BRL feels it is in the best interest of the racers to monitor and control developing ESC technology as it relates to the brushless motor segment. New speed controls may be submitted at anytime to the BRL for testing evaluation and or approval.

6.1 ) All Electronic Speed Controls must be approved for competition by the BRL.

6.2 ) New Electronic Speed Controls must be available through major distribution channels for a minimum of 60 days before gaining final approval for BRL competition.

6.3 ) Production Electronic Speed Controls Only

6.4 ) Approved Electronic Speed Controls for all classes.

Section 7 - General Radio Equipment Rules

7.1 ) All transmitters and receiver must be FCC approved.

7.2 ) Unless using a 2.4ghz system all radios are required to be off when not on the racing surface.

7.3 ) Drivers using crustal based systems are required to have two alternate frequencies. If a frequency conflict occurs the lower qualified driver is required to change.

7.4 ) No roll-over antennas

7.5) All cars are required to be scored with transponder. It is the responsibility of the racer to make sure his transponder is operating correctly.



Section 8 - Rules of Competition

8.1 ) A drivers meeting will be held prior to the start of the first heat. It is mandatory for all drivers to attend.

8.2 ) All drivers will report their cars to tech before and immediately after each race. Failure to do so will result in penalty or disqualification

8.3 ) Tech official may check for any rules infraction at any time. Motors may be torn down at his discretion.

8.4 ) No car may enter the track area after a race begins.

8.4 - 1) A car pulled for repair or adjustment may not re-enter a qualifying race or main. Doing so will result in penalty or disqualification.

8.5 ) Once the competition begins substitute drivers will not be allowed.

8.6 ) Practice- In an effort to keep competition fair and limit the amount of travel required for BRL Regional events practice will be restricted. Friday night practice if available will be limited to less then 2 hours in the evening. (The Friday session will be left up to the individual track owners and may start no earlier then 8pm local time) Official practice times will be posted in advance of each event.

8.6-1 ) Controlled Practice- Controlled sessions will be broken out by class and limited to 8 cars maximum for a duration of 4 minutes. Drivers may enter and exit as many times as they like during there 4 minute session. Due to the large number of cars each driver will receive only 1 attempt per rotation.

8.6-2 ) Open Practice - Open practice times may be declared at the race directors discretion. Practice is un-controlled and drivers may enter and exit as they please during this time.

8.6-3 ) Drivers competing in a BRL Tour race will not be allowed to practice on the event track for a period of 72 hours prior to the first scheduled practice session.

8.6-4 ) All drivers must be registered with paid entry before the can participate in a practice session..

8.6-5) Driver are limited to one practice attempt per class entered in each available controlled practice rotation.

8.6-6 ) Final round of practice will be set-up by heat order.

8.7 ) Qualifying

8.7-1 ) 4 rounds of IFMAR style qualifying will be conducted at each event. Cars will be placed on the starting grid and launch on the tone. Heat length will be 4 minutes.

8.7- 2 ) A drivers single fastest round will be used to determine heat resort or main placement.

8.7-3 ) Heats/Main will be re-sorted at the conclusion of qualifying rounds 2, 3 and 4.

8.8 Mains

8.8-1) All mains will be packed full (8 cars maximum).

8.8-2 ) All-mains will be scored by laps.
17.5 Sportsman Stock 70 laps
13.5 Super Stock 75 laps
13.5 Masters Truck 75 laps
10.5 Pro Modified 80 Laps


8.8-3 ) The fastest 5 drivers at the conclusion of qualifying are locked into the A-main. Bonus points will be awarded based on qualifying position.

8.8-4 ) The top 5 qualified drivers will compete in a 25 lap dash to determine A-main grid positions

8.8-5 ) Drivers qualified 6 - 13 will compete in the B- main. The top two finishers from the B will bump to the A-main . Then winner will start in grid position 6, the runner up will start in grid position 7.

8.8-6 ) Grid Position 8 (‘The Lucky Dog”) will be filled by the driver who turns the fastest time in a lower main. (Note: This may be third place B-main finisher or any lower main winner.)

8.8-7 ) Driver may protest scoring within 5 minutes of a completed race. Protest must be written describing the problem

8.8-8 ) The Race Directors decision is final on all scoring issues.



Section 9 National Points

9.1 ) Eligible driver will be awarded point scores based on overall finish after each regional event. Overall finishing position is determined by main performance. (Example A-main finishers ranked 1-8 overall, 9th place points score goes to the highest finishing B-Main driver not bumped to the A.) (See chart below)

9.2 ) Point awarded for the Novak National Finals (including bonus points) will have a point value of 1.5 times that of a regional event. (Example: 400 points x 1.5 = 600 points)

9.3 ) Points Total for each individual race is a combination of over Overall Points Score plus all accumulated Bonus Points for that event.

9.4 ) National Points ranking will be determined at the end of the season by combining a drivers regional score using the highest 3 finishes in the first 5 races attended per class. This score will be added to his point total accumulated at the National Finals.

9.4-1 ) Driver may compete in a class at as many regional events as they like. However after 5 races they are not eligible to score race or bonus points.

9.4-2 ) Points are awarded based on finishing position. If a driver not eligible for points was to win an event the top score of 400 points would not be awarded for that event. 2nd place would receive 398, third 396 and so on.

9.5 ) Points System

Points Score
The winner of each will receiver 400 points. Points will decrease in increments of 2.

Bonus Points:
Awarded to the Top 5 Qualifying Positions at each event.
(TQ) 5 points,
(2nd) 4 points,
(3rd) 3 points

Hard Charger Bonus Awarded to the main winners at each event.
A-Main winner 2 points
All Lower main winners 1 point

Tie-Breaker - Finishing position at the National Final.



Section 10 - The Novak National Finals

10-1 ) Due to a limited time schedule entries for the Novak National Finals will be capped at 160 racers.

10.2 ) Divers ranked in the top 32 in points in the 13.5 Super Stock and 10.5 Pro Modified classes and the top 16 in 17.5 Sportsman Stock and 13.5 Masters Truck will be guaranteed an entry into the National Finals provided they meet the pre-entry deadline (TBA). These driver will also receive higher seeding for practice and qualifying heats.

10.3 ) Points ranking will be based on top 3 combined event scores before the finals.

10. 4) All other entries for the finals will be based on the reception dated of paid pre-entry. (Entry forms and due date will be available after the first of the year.)

Section 8 - Rules of Competition

8.4 ) No car may enter the track area after a race begins.

8.4 - 1) A car pulled for repair or adjustment may not re-enter a qualifying race or main. Doing so will result in penalty or disqualification.

8.6-1 ) Controlled Practice- Controlled sessions will be broken out by class and limited to 8 cars maximum for a duration of 4 minutes. Drivers may enter and exit as many times as they like during there 4 minute session. Due to the large number of cars each driver will receive only 1 attempt per rotation.

8.6-2 ) Open Practice - Open practice times may be declared at the race directors discretion. Practice is un-controlled and drivers may enter and exit as they please during this time.


8.7 ) Qualifying

8.7-1 ) 4 rounds of IFMAR style qualifying will be conducted at each event. Cars will be placed on the starting grid and launch on the tone. Heat length will be 4 minutes.

8.8 Mains

8.8-1) All mains will be packed full (8 cars maximum).

8.8-2 ) All-mains will be scored by laps.
17.5 Sportsman Stock 70 laps
13.5 Super Stock 75 laps
13.5 Masters Truck 75 laps
10.5 Pro Modified 80 Laps



Section 9 National Points


9.4 ) National Points ranking will be determined at the end of the season by combining a drivers regional score using the highest 3 finishes in the first 5 races attended per class. This score will be added to his point total accumulated at the National Finals.

9.4-1 ) Driver may compete in a class at as many regional events as they like. However after 5 races they are not eligible to score race or bonus points.

9.4-2 ) Points are awarded based on finishing position. If a driver not eligible for points was to win an event the top score of 400 points would not be awarded for that event. 2nd place would receive 398, third 396 and so on.


Section 10 - The Novak National Finals

10.2 ) Divers ranked in the top 32 in points in the 13.5 Super Stock and 10.5 Pro Modified classes and the top 16 in 17.5 Sportsman Stock and 13.5 Masters Truck will be guaranteed an entry into the National Finals provided they meet the pre-entry deadline (TBA). These driver will also receive higher seeding for practice and qualifying heats.

So we are not racing 4 minutes in the mains? We are racing for laps? Will the amount of laps work for all tracks? With 4200 batteries why are we racing 4 minutes? We used to run 4 minutes with 2000s and 6 cells.

I think Sonny stated before that the switch to 4 minutes was mainly to keep in line with what other places are doing and also to speed up the program a bit, since hopefully there will be even more entries this year then last.

Yes it will. I used last year notes as a guide for determining lap totals.

In some class it may require a slight gearing change. That's just adds a little intrigue to your race strategy.

maybe for the first race any mccalister truck body should be allowed, being time is running so low. there is less than a month, they are not done, and you have to allow for shipping time and you know there is gonna be a few that will not get em in time. just a thought.

Sorry I did not mean to avoid it, just overlooked it for some reason.

Unfortunately the fun police has ruled NO on the fender flares....

I’ve updated rule 3.8 to account for this.
