Sizzlers....did HW's get the name back and reintroduce?

I know in a battle to "one up" TL bought the Sizzler name and made a PM version of those cars. After kicking that dog, the dog bit back and sued.

I'm hearing Hot Wheels is making Sizzlers again? If so, does that make any of you more interested in the collectibility of the PM version of Sizzlers? I know I'm more intigued. I have the Speed Racer set and it is a hoot. With all the ins and outs of who owned what on Sizzlers, slots, die-cast etc. I must say it keeps the die-cast historian busy.

I still have my Speed racer Sizzler sets, also one opened and 1 boxed Sizzler drag set.

I hated how long it took to charge up the cars for a short run around the track.

hopefully, the JL Sizzlers will be a htf,item,40 years down the road.

Of but a few of them, the PM versions were a bust.
I sold mine off a few years ago (wish I would have kept a few of them though).
Anybody have a list of these?
Are these listed on Wyatt's site?

As kids we had a bunch of those. I had a white Firebird that was unbeatable! And a orange Mustang that you would think had square wheels. Even had the charger that looked like a service station that plugged into the wall. Thought I had saved all those, but they are gone. This might be something I would like to get into, I really enjoyed those as a kid.

The Weinermobile is awesome!!!

Talking A vintage comeback!!!

I will give JL the credit for at least making the attempt to bring Sizzlers back (a product which was somebody elses). It was a bold move on Tom Lowe's part and he deserves credit. And I can't hold them to recreating accurate looking 70's Mattel toys (an indirect salute to their competition?).
The JL versions could have been a lot better (the selection of cars for the most part was limited and those wheels sucked!!!), but I do believe (and I don't know for certain) that the JL versions were subcontracted out entirely from their regular diecast line mfgrs (I believe from a company called Centuri). Perhaps that is why they looked so funky...

I will add to this thread though that by what I have read over the last 24 hours (on other boards) of the arrival of these is that nostalgic themes (vintage, Classics, HW Club, repops etc) are very much alive and well among collectors and by what Mattel has been putting out thus far marketing winners.

Though I have heard from many (here) who don't care for nostalgic themed JL cars (Topper, Commemoratives), I do believe RC2 could learn from this.

There is still a market for 60's - 70's retro diecast.

So long as the product is done right...

So did I.
I wish I could get mine.
Deep in the bowels of my parents home lies hidden a treasure trove of 50-60 Mattel Sizzlers including the Cuda TA (as well as about a hundred Tyco, AFX and Aurora TJets including a TJet Ice Cream truck).

Lost about 25 years ago in a attic clean-out and re-do, my sister had left these under some floorboards between the joices that were later covered over by nailed 4'x8' sheets of plywood.

Nobody can tell me exactly where though...

Lost...

Well, for that kind of value, it would pay you to redo their attic for them again!!!!

The JL Speed Racer versions look good enough and they ran well when we did race them.

Not sure there is a market for this to be honest.

I think the only way these will sell to today's kids or even adults to play with is if they figured out how to get a ten minute run from a 30 second charge. No one has the patience anymore to charge for 5 minutes to run for 3 minutes...

As to collecting, they will have to be priced under $5 (IMHO) and you know that isn't going to happen, so I see a bust after the initial HW "gotta have it" rush

I would agree in regard to the time duration of the charge - and it would not surprise me if Mattel is working on this. As far as the market segment, I would say adult collectors is who they have in mind.
That they pay 8 bucks for some of the high end retro HW (redline) cars, I could see them buying these too. Again, so long as they (Mattel) strive to re-create that exact look of the originals (from what I have now seen, they have). More than 2.99 for me is tough. Most others it seems (by what I read here) have no problem paying more for what they like.
As far as model selection, they have quite a lot to choose from in regard to their vintage line-up (hopefully a Ford MK IV, Indy Eagle and a Angelo M70 in the works too), but I can see a whole host of other cars they can do as well (Chargers, Mustangs and Camaros, Chryslers 300M, 350Z's etc) - all done with that same scale 70's Sizzler-ish look). Did I mention they did the wheels right? Perfect!

They can take this a lot further than the gotta-have it crowd. They stay focused.
HW Classics did well past their intro as well as the 25th and Vintage series cars. I'm completely hooked on the RLC cars...(a perfectly made Evil Weevil!).

I'm looking forward to this.
