Due to slower-than-expected sales and the expense of recertifying the vehicle for 2007 emissions and safety standards, GM has told dealers that this year will be the last for the Pontiac GTO, with the last vehicles hitting US shores in September. Having sold 13,500 units in '04 and 11,600 last year, the GTO never quite lived up to expectations.
All they did was take a Holden Monaro and rebadge it, basically. Way to go all out GM. It's not the GTO or concept that didn't sell, it was that rewarmed Australian model that looked like every other Pontiac being made

I still think it's all about the soul. I mean that wasn't a GTO, as much as people want to argue about how it looks similar to other Pontiacs just like the old GTO or whatever, it just wasn't a GTO, it was a Holden Monaro.
The new GTO has no soul. It's missing the one thing that makes people fall in love with their cars.
That's something that the Mustang has plenty of, and that's why they sell like hot cakes.
Personally I think GM should have tried to sell a car, not a name. IMO It was never a true GTO. Putting it on a platform of Australian origin was a big mistake and it never really looked like an old GTO. If GM wants to sell a car like that to the baby boomers, then make something the baby boomers can relate to and are interested in.
It served it's purpose, an affordable V8 RWD car from GM. GM needed something to compete with Fords Mudstain. The Vette is in a different league as to where it's competitters are Vipers and exotics. Now that GM is doing away with it's Pontiac ponycar ,all I can say is BRING ON THE FIREBIRD.
