I was wondering if anyone could help me figure the date code on a Pontiac engine. The code from the exhuast ports is A094, and stamped into the end of the head is the code YZ. Without any parts lists or other reference materials, I'm guessing it's Jan. 09, ?64? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and have a great day everyone!! Terry
My bad, the stamping on the end of the head is YN, not YZ. There looks to be a code on the intake as well J 765
TC, here is one site that helps decode Pontiac numbers. I know that Pontiac blocks have stamped numbers such as YN, but according to this, there's a different set of numbers for the heads. Check it out!
Here's one for any make and model, but it's a "fee based" club with lifetime dues of $25 (American Automobile Casting Numbers Club - who knew there was such a thing?). Not sure if they cover just "casting" numbers, or "stamped" codes as well.
Hi
I have the codes for Pontiac motors,I buy and sell restoration parts specialising in Pontiac& chevy. The 2 letter codes began in 1965.
The YN IS FOR A 1974 350 2 BRL with an automatic from am A body car.
so your date code is jan 9th 1974. the other yn code is for a 1965 326 so dates do not match yours is a 7.6 comp ratio 4 brlheads should be 4c or 46
Pontiac used a three or four digit date code on the block, heads and intake. The first is a letter corresponding to the month, the second digit and , if present, third digit correspond to the day of the month and the last number represents the year. A094 would indicate January 09 of 1964; however, I am under the impression that the '0' wasn't usually used, just omitted. I'm sure there are exceptions. The date codes for engine blocks is found near the distributor hole in the back and the casting # to the right and rear of the block, not too far from the distributor. The displacement, in cubic inches, was cast into the driver's side in front of the motor mount location near the freeze plug. The application code of the block was stamped into the right(passenger) side in the center section just below the head and serial #. '64 and earlier use three digits, '65 and later use two letters. On 68 and newer blocks, the VIN is stamped vertically on the right side next to the timing cover. '66 and earlier blocks have two freeze plugs per side, '67 and up, three. Also, two motor mount holes per side indicate a '69 or earlier block, three or five, '70 or newer.
Heads usually have their casting # cast into the center exhaust ports. Some have the # on one or more ports, but they are very few and rare. Pre '66 heads have the entire # and '66 up have a two or three digit # corresponding to the last #'s in their part #. Heads usually have the date code too, usually located somewhere on the ridge parallel with the valve cover rail and just below it.
Intake manifolds will have a seven digit casting # and most have a date code as well. The J 765 is either just a # used during manufacture and isn't the date code, or it was misread. J 165 would make sense, as it would mean September 16, 1965. If you do have a pre '66 engine, a post '65 intake will not fit as the mating angle was changed for the '66 and later engines.
Hope this helps.

I was thinking there are some Poncho fans here on the board, they'll all join in when they get back from fest. Thanks guys!
