Happy Dyngus Day from South Bend!
Happy Dyngus Day from South Bend, Indiana...the land that can't get in time sync with the rest of the region!
What is Dyngus Day, you ask??? (OK, Big Daddy Dave and Dave Metzner...feel free to jump right in here) It's a "holiday" of Polish derivation that falls the Monday after Easter. I am told by my Polish friends that have actually grown up in Poland, that it is NOT celebrated there anymore because it involved switching women on the back of their legs with willow switches. Hmmm... Anyway, here in South Bend, we have elevated this day to be one of political festivity and drunken debauchery. All over the west side of town, Polish sausage by the ton, noodles, sauerkraut are being cooked at various social clubs and the beer trucks have been on 24 hour delivery. Politicians from all over the state come to campaign. Most government workers take the day off and AM General, makers of the Hummer, got it written into their contract to have the day off with pay! Ah, it's an amazing sight to behold as you drive around the west end starting at about 2:00 in the afternoon....the best ancient Roman Bacanalia (sp?) or New Orleans Mardi Gras have nothing on our Dyngus Day.
Hugs!
Lisa
P.S. And if you're looking for something a little more tame, tune into ESPN tonight to see the All American Slam Dunk Competition which is being broadcast from my new place of employment, Bethel College. Look for me! I'll be the one at the top of the bleachers holding the Polish Sausage Sandwhich and waving!

Holy Willow Switch, Batman! That was more information than I think anyone here in South Bend has! Pretty interesting! Thanks!

Isn't this the 75th official Dyngus Day in Michiana? For some reason, the calendar I got doesn't list Dyngus day right beneath Canada's Easter Monday. Must've been an oversight ...

I thought Dyngus was that thing I had as a kid but was too young to properly take care of and it died.
