buy 10 sets get a WL set...promos...why?

All these 1000 pcs release's of promos are usually set up this way...buy 10 sets and get a WL set.

Is this the only way they can sell 1000 pcs? ...by getting the WL collectors to buy 10 sets at a time?

Yup... No one wants the regular issues, all anyone wants is the least common 'variation' produced.

this system of sales may work for the dealers involved but as a collector it does not work for me

so the bottom line is as in any type of business...the almighty dollar and not the happieness of the collector

We have it setup so that every sixth set is a WL on the derby cars until they are gone. For the Ghias, it was every 7th car. I can say there are those out there that bought 1 set and got a WL. Since Owl probably does not mind, I will use him as an example. He bought 1 Ghia and his was the WL Ghia. The issue is not always to move cars, but how to fairly distribute the WLs. I would say the way to fairly distribute them is every so many sets. It is hard to sell promos and the WLs give you a big help. When I first started, no WLs were allowed in the promos. Since JL has now allowed them, things are better.

Hello Walter,
Though nice as some of these WL cars may look, most don't have the same value (with exception WWW Zingers excluded as these were claimed as givaways and yes, I'm talking big $$$$$$$$$$$ because deep down thats what most WL's amount to most collectors) punch as do WL cars that are sold in the retail chains AT RETAIL PRICES (where Joe Sleeze can pay off his store operatives for cars or the morning urchin with no life raids their WL's at store openings).
That the (one) person holding the exclusive rights on all the exclusive WL's and controls the distribution through limited minimum purchases makes these less desireable. There is no random here. Its pay through the nose to get the rare car.

Here is my common sense math:

$1.66 (Kaybee's) = (potential) 300.00 on "eBay"

OR

buy 10 sets at $290.00 plus shipping (and get a free WL) = a.......... 290.00 WL that I paid too much for .

Key word: profit.

you would have to want that w/l pretty bad to buy 10 sets. the coolcolectiblescars are like that but they also insert random w/l's in regular orders. i bought two cars from them and got a w/l orange 69 Camaro SS Ragtop.at least if you cant afford to buy 12 sets they still give you a chance at a w/l.

I'm glad the WL's help the promos sell because I like the promos, just don't care for the sales tactics for the WL's.

I do understand it's a give and take situation though, without the WL's the promos may not exsist.

sorry about my bottom line statement...I didn't mean for it to sound so harsh.

I do like the random insertion idea very much

the last sets of the cool collectables i bought of a dealer at a "lower price" wasn't worth it to me. i was informed by him in my package in a letter that one of the cars i ordered came to him a white so he would do the right thing and refund my 12 dollars and keep the white. what a crock of s@!T. that sucks in my opinion. he has to buy 10 sets so lets get everyone else to buy them for him so he can collect the profit on the whites. never again. this guy actually emailed me today to try to offer this "great" deal to me again. yeah right. beware he's posted on this site again. i don't usually do things like this and if i hadn't received an email from him this morning i probably wouldn't have. i'm not a wl collector and thats not what i'm upset about. i was shorted one car because of sheer greed. sorry i'll step down from my pedastal now.

Chad,

It is clear that you are very unhappy about receiving a refund
for one of the cars that I presold you. It was not my intention
to "profit" from the WL's I received when I purchased 24 CC Cars.
I did not sell any of the WL's I received. I ordered both WL
Zingers with my 24 cars. I received an extra Zinger BWF GTO
randomly inserted in my order. I traded the WL with a collector
from this board for another WL from that series.
At the time this occured I shipped you your order minus one
car with a refund for the car. You received both 69 Camaro
convertibles for $18 shipped from me as well as $9 back for the
GTO I did not have to send you. I sold you those cars for $4 less
than I paid for each car. There is no profit happening here.
I am a collector that prefers to obtain the WL's from these
promotions and is willing to resell the cars I need to buy for the
promotion at a loss. I factor this loss into the cost of the "free"
WL's I receive with my order and that's fine with me.
I guess you expected me to ship you the extra WL that was
randomly inserted into my order after I paid well over $300 for
the order. I did not anticipate only having two cars to ship you
but I thought you would still have been happy to receive the two
cars at that price. I should have offered you a full refund. If this
ever occurs again that is what I will do. I emailed you today
not knowing how unhappy you were with our deal. If you would like
to send back the two Camaros I will refund your money. Email
me if that is what you would like. I want you to be happy.

Regards, DrDeal, Andrew

This really isn't anyone else's business to have an opinion about, until you both posted about it here.

First of all, let's give Chad credit for not naming names when he could have. Second, let's give Andrew credit for stepping up and admitting it was him.

Not really clear what exactly transpired here, but it sounds like Chad pre-ordered a set from Andrew, who then decided to "cherry pick" from the order and send Chad what was left, along with a refund for the missing cars?

Doesn't matter, Andrew, whether you "re-sell" the cars for a profit or keep them for yourself, the point is that you should have just sent Chad the order as it came to you, isn't it? If someone orders a set from you and they get a couple of W/Ls, shouldn't you just pass them through to them?

The word "refund" shouldn't even have to enter the equation, should it?

If I got this wrong, please set us all straight. I'm still suffering from "Scott's flu"! (don't worry, I'm wearing a mask and gloves as I type this! )

This is not the direction I hoped this thread would go,I was hoping for some innovative ideas on product distrubution without having a collector to have to buy 10 sets of cars.

I'm not going to comment on Chad and Andrews dilemma because I can understand both points of view.( I would make a horrible judge )

I feel bad now...it seems a lot of my threads go in a negative direction...guess I make a better lurker

I think your post is a good one. Always looking for better ideas. If I could get promos made for what walmart pays for JL, that would change the whole process.

Dear Car Nut,

Yes, Chad preordered three regular issue CC cars from me.
I agreed to sell them to him for $4 less per car than I paid. I spent
over $300 on MY order in order to obtain two WL's. I got lucky and
had a WL randomly substituted. Chad preordered regular issue cars.
I had no obligation to give him the WL. I already stated that in retrospect I should have offered him a full refund at the time. I thought he would still
be happy to get both Camaros for $9 each with free shipping.
I sent back his $9 for the third car. I traded the other WL for
another one from this series. The other people that have purchased
cars from me have felt they good a good value and knew that my
offer arose from my interest in getting the WL's.
I value my reputation on this board and have emailed Chad to
state that he can have his money back if that is his choice. I am
not a "Dealer" but a am a collector who like WL's and was trying to
offer other collectors a lower price on these cars since I had to
purchase many to get the WL's and know some people do not care
about or collect WL's. I sold 19 of the 24 cars I received and was short
one car for an order because of the above situation. I do not think
I should be written off a person who is "greedy" or is trying to take
advantage of Board Memebers. I pride myself on being a member of
this board and visit it daily. I have traded with many board members
and have sold some of these promo cars to others. I have never had
a problem with anyone before and hope that Chad can forgive me for
keeping the extra WL and trading it to get one I did not have for my
collection.

Regards, DrDeal, Andrew

Yes, your right Walter.
Try posting a "Lookie what I found, another WL - that makes 3,196 I have found in the last week, hooray, hooray for me" posts.
Those are so much more instrospective...

Your post are fine Walter. They have substance and shmultz. Pros and cons and they spur interesting debate and discussion.

That is what this BB needs more of, not less.

Mod, I do not understand the math. Buying 10 sets for $290 to get a WL set does not "equal" a $290 WL set. The 10 regular sets have value as well. The WL set was either free or at the cost of a set. $290 was not spent just for the WLs. I would say that some do this to sell off the WLs and some regulars to get the cars they want at a much reduced cost, or at times free, or maybe make something.
