It's all a sad result of our instant-gratification society. No one gives time to things. They want to pop into a show and instantly "get it" or they're out. Networks have adopted that model too.

Would many of our favorite, classic series have been picked up at all if that same mind set had existed back then? TNG may not have made it to a third season. It may have been another Firefly canceled halfway through it's first.

But, that's they way things have evolved.

Andromeda comes to mind immediately for me.
Season 1 was very uneven and lackluster.
But once they hit season 2, it found it's legs and hit the ground running.

These days, it would have been canceled half way through the first season.
Because the ratings didn't justify the cost.

John Carter was 'cancelled' in a way. One movie, not immediately a big hit- so, no sequel.
In future, I think people will really appreciate it, but too late to make another with the same cast.
At least we get these little tastes of goodness.

From what I can see those making the decisions chose to deliberately set up the film to fail. I've seen far less deserving films get far more promotion and support than John Carter to recoup every possible dime.

As I see it it's unforgivable behaviour.

Firefly didn't HAVE a season and a half to find its footing. Luckily it landed on its feet running and was fantastic from the very start, so we got 13 good episodes before it got murdered.
