View Full Version : What is more important?

At my local track we have a consistant debate on which is more important.

1) TQ'ing for the night
2) Winning the A main

I fall under the first and feel TQ is more important than winning the A main. I do admit that winning is a good thing everyone wants to do it. Racing these toys cars is fun too, I always have a blast going door to door with my friends and do not want to take anything from that. However, if you want to really prove who has the fastest car/set up ect..... then TQ would be the best judge of that and the main just boils down to who has some better racing luck. I take for example this past ROAR paved nats in mod Danny B was the class of the field but do to some bad luck he did not pull off the win. No slap to Andy Mac for taking the win he had a good car as well just Danny did have the fastest car all weekend and his TQ proved it.

Right now I would say that the majority of people at my local track favor the first over the second but I would like to hear other peoples thoughts on this matter.

Thanks

I'd rather win the A-Main. Rather you TQ or start last, a win is a win. Big events or events with trophies go to the winner, not the TQ. Now if you can TQ and win, thats the most important. How do you feel when you TQ and finish last or finish 2nd to the last starting car?

Z-main it does not bother me at all if I TQ and loose. I would like to make the point that at most major races there is a TQ trophy as well as a first place one.

Thank you for your thoughts.

ill take a TQ.. it shows you were the fastest car for qualifying. there is only one main.. but usually 3 qualifyers... mains are not usually as clean as a qualifyer either.. so it isnt a real show of who is the best.. everyone is racing each other, not the clock...

saying tq is better is like saying the pole sitter for the daytona 500 should be given the money instead of the race winner

Rebel I am sorry but I am not saying that at all. However the person who does win the pole at every Nascar race does get money from Bud plus has the best chance of leading the first lap which pays money, and bonus points as well which could decide a championship.

Also keep in mind RC cars and Nascar are not the same (but that is another debate). Thank you for your thoughts.

What are you bored monti??? lol BTW, thanks for bringing up bad memories...:p

You forgot TQing and winning, that's the best...

I put winning. Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. While I got the TQ award this year and a track record that probably won't be touched til the next nationals at Tri-clone. Andy got the trophy that said NATIONAL CHAMPION.

I've tq'ed two nats and have not been the overall winner. Back in the days of triple a-mains, the tq should have the best chance of winning. Now with single a-main races anything can happen and i would give TQ'ing a little more clout. But winning is still most important.

Most satisfying thing having the fastest car in the main(s). 2001 sandhills and 2003 snowbirds for me, didn't TQ either race, won sandhills and got 2nd at that snowbirds.

Burbs, is it easier to TQ in a 3 car heat or win in 7 or 8 car main? Does TQ give you the right to move through traffic easier? I just think that driving and sometimes luck to stay out of trouble wins the race. TQ shows everyone that you are the fastest through the heats. I've seen it many times that some people including myself use the heats to better the setup for the main. As long as I can make the A, then I can work towards the win. Also, in my opinion I feel like the TQ is the target. Sometimes being TQ makes you feel like the car is perfect but it allows the others in the A-Main to search for the extra that will push them past the TQ time or for the win. Just my thoughts and how I look at it.

Hey Monti
I voted winning also..

I agree with Danny B. when TQ is good
but when you Take home the title of National Champion or Snowbirds Champion that just has a better ring than just TQ

If I cant TQ or start on the front row, I would rather start 9th or 10th. Especially in mod, let everyone go and rip on it and just sit back and wait for the big dump!

But to answer Monti's -Q- I would rather WIN than TQ. Lets be honest who really remembers who TQ'ed. Everyone remembers who won!! Its that simple. It's like football or basketball. The Steelers are what 14 and 1. First in the league? Now if they went to the superbowl and lost, what would you remember most?? Oh, the Steelers were first in the NFL but lost? Or SO and SO won the Superbowl?????

We always remember the winners!

Nobody remembers me, I haven't won anything in a WHILE!!! :freak:

I'll take a win over a TQ any day. Do I like to TQ? sure... why? because its a psychological advantage for the race.

The focus here is on who's fast, and while that is important racing is about winning. If you want to see who's got the fastest car, set up time trials and only put one car on the track at a time.

Racing, and winning, is not about the fastest car, but it helps! Its also about driving and race strategy. Plus the intangibles like luck. (I don't happen to believe in luck).

If racing was always about the fastest car period, they would have never put multiple cars on the same track.

In my "perfect" world, I wouldn't be known as the guy with the fastest car. I'd be known as the best DRIVER!

I like to tq, and then break the track record in the A to put an exclamation point on how good your car was throughout the day. That is the best to me!! I always think that it is cool to break the record in the A.

I'll take the win. To many weeks I've seen the poll sitter go into turn 1 and someone hit him from behind on the start. Just bad luck.

RC companies want the win, they pay more comp for an A-Main win than a TQ.

They would rather say they won the worlds compared to saying the TQ'd it.

On a club level, I'll take TQ over winning because everyone has more chances to have a good run than you do in the main & I think that tells you who really has the best car. But in a big race I would much rather win than TQ for obviuos reasons.

To me the win, is much better then TQ, "sometimes" the TQ was the guy that got a clean heat and does not have the best car. To win you need it all, good setup,
good wheel, good thinking...

I agree with PUF19! You can have the best car, but you can also be in a rough heat. A TQ gives you a nice advantage of starting in front of the pack, but winning will always be better. Afterall, we are there to have fun, but honestly, we're there to win. IT'S RACING!

Thanks!

People keep saying "best car, best car". I don't give a hoot about the best car. How about the best race by the best driver. If you want to have the best car, then when a friend comes over tell him "These are all my CAR'S trophies".

Justin_29

*I correct myself; You can have the best driver in a rough heat.

thanks!

Winning...Making the show, then winning.

To TQ is like winning practice, now go win the race .
You have 3 rounds of practice to get ready for the race :p.

personally i fell that neither is the most important. to me the most important thing is having the fastest car. winning races is NOT about being the fastest. (and its also not about "who wants it most"), winning races is about traffic, especially since you ARE traffic for people trying to pass you.

so for me if TQ has the fastest car then tq is most important, if A-main winner has fastest car then a-main is most important!

but even more important than that is enjoying racing :)

Having fun is what it is all about to me. TQ, win or both is a bonus
I preach the same thing to my team drivers. I dont want any pressure on them. Have fun and if the results come then great :)

Qualifying is just the path you have to travel to to get to the RACE. Saying you're racing someone else in a qualifier isn't racing at all. It's qualifying for the RACE!

Personally I say TQ'ing. In my opinion the main is simply dumb luck quite a bit of the time. My attitude is that I take qualifying seriously and then the main is just the fun run at the end of the night. Whatever happens happens. At a race like Nationals I view this differently, but at weekly shows that's how I view it.

You have to remember its not the fastest car that TQ's. Its the fastest lap!

I have been in that position in a big dirt oval race many years ago. TQed with drivers from the left coast compeating. I did get a nice TQ trophy but way overpowerd the track in the main and finnished 8th or so. Who remembers my TQ? Just me I'm sure, but it was nice to have everyone scoping out your setup before the main for once! LOL In the end I would have rather won the thing than TQed though. More people would have remembered that other than me! JMO

I'm with you on this one Monti, TQ means more to me than winning. It shows that you had then best car, and I think that is what we all work for. Winning is an added plus. Not too often you see a clean main. But then again nobody remembers TQ, only who won.

To me making the show can only be topped by a win........SO my answer would be to win...I have tq'd.......And been taking out by a lap car.....costing me a win...so...a Win is most important...actually rubbing fenders with friends and racing hard and clean is most important......winning is icing on the cake

We look at it like this TQ is for the wrench (setup) and Main is for the driver to show off his/her skills

Local race, I want to TQ and win. If I don't TQ, but win, then I can brag about winning. If I TQ and don't win, then I say I was the fastest.

Any big race out of town, I go there with the intent of making the A-main and winning. TQ is just a bonus.

If I am traveling around to different tracks and racing with the local guys I am going to find out what the track record is at that particular track. This way I have a goal to reach.I will be wrenching my car all night to try and break that track record. This way I will be getting faster all night. And I should tq sooner or later if I am concentrating completely on that record. And maby with a little luck get a win sooner or later.I need a goal to reach of some sort or I feel I am just wasting tuime and money or just getting in someones way on the track.

While TQing is important, the overall win is more impressive if you can top the TQ time with the best drivers of the day racing with you. Then no one has excusses.lol
