Well, I'd take ANYTHING for free so I have to disregard that part of the question.

What DVD's would I never buy? That's easy. The DVDs I'd never buy are probably among the most popular discs made.

I'd never buy SEINFELD. I love the show. I can watch it on broadcast TV about five times per day and it will be syndicated in perpetuity. Why the hell would I buy it...to listen to commentary tracks once and watch a special?

I'd never buy FRIENDS for the exact same reason. I love the show. I watch it three times a day. Don't need the discs.

SIMPSONS...see above.

STAR TREK. Other than the fact that I don't like it, the Space channel in Canada has played it twice a day, every day since they first went on the air. That's approximately 4500 airings.

The short version is this: If I see something on TV on a regular basis, I don't buy the DVD. I spend a LOT of money on DVDs but even I have to set limits. I can't buy everything and there has to be guidelines. My guidlines are simple: I buy what I don't see on TV for free.

Before I logged on, I just finished watching a DVD. It was COSMIC MAN from 1959. At the risk of embarrassing myself, last night I watched XANADU with Olivia Newton John from 1980. The day before I watched GOLIATH AND THE DRAGON from 1960. Other viewing in the last two weeks include HERCULES AGAINST THE MOON MEN, several STARMAN movies and episodes of THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB.

"Don't mince words, Bones; what do you really think?"

:D

I can't think of much that I feel so strongly about as to declare I'd never buy it. I suppose I'd never buy any reality show, given that I never watch any of them. I'd not buy Seinfeld at this point, nor Friends -- I like both shows, but I wouldn't buy them unless they cost about a tenth of what they currently cost, because I'm not after specific episodes. There are, by the same token, seasons of, say, MASH and The Simpsons I'd consider buying because I would be looking for specific episodes. Shows like Alias and Lost I would buy because they are better seen on DVD than on TV because of their serialized nature (I have all three seasons of Alias, in fact). And there are plenty of movies I'd never buy, but none for which I would make some sort of mental note to avoid doing so -- none that bug me to the point where I'm deeply offended at seeing them for sale.

The trouble with saying any movie starring ______ (fill in the blank) or directed by (fill in the blank) is that even those stars or directors you really don't like do something amazing every now and then.

For example, Jim Carrey's style leaves me cold but "The Truman Show" and "Man in the Moon" are amazing (haven't seen "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" yet).

The thing about movies is that it's all about taste and what entertains us. Making blanket statements is an easy way out. Being specific is difficult.

It would be like me saying, I would never have the complete set of "Star Trek: Voyager" because every episode was crap. OK, every episode was crap but there might have been one or two episodes that were worth watching again. Or there might not.

Every movie ever made belongs on someone's shelf (usually Brent Gair's who seems to have every movie ever made).

Except "Gigli."

:).

You'd be surprised at what I DON'T have!

The enormity of my movie collection is largely a function of the fact that my DVD budget goes to small and oddball stuff. The reason I can afford to buy the oddball goodies is that I spend almost nothing on big movies.

I DON'T have any Star Wars or Star Trek movies. I don't have any Indiana Jones movies. I don't have any Lord of the Ring Movies. No Superman movies, no Back to Future movies, no Terminator, no Aliens, no Matrix, no Harry Potter, no Spiderman, no Toy Story...

Instead of those titles, my budget goes to SLIGHTLY less known movies like: Bowanga Bowanga, They Saved Hitlers Brain, Wild Women of Wongo, The Atomic Brain, Love After Death, Nabonga, King of the Zombies, The Amazing Transparent Man, Wildcat Women, The Indestructible Man...

Carrey did an amazing job in both Truman and Man in the Moon. Truman Show is one of my favs. While I wasn't all that impressed with Man in the Moon, Jim Carrey did a brilliant performance as Andy Kaufmann. Should've got an Oscar for either of those films.

Very true. Reading everybody's posts, almost every name mentioned made me think "Wait, what about ---------?"

Still, everybody's got at least one or two celebs they just can't bear to see regardless of the project. Rosie O'Donnell and (say it through your nose with a hateful whine) Roseaaaaaaannne Baaaaaaaaarrrrr are intolerable for me, as is Joan Rivers. Her self-indulgent visit to Nip/Tuck marred an otherwise fantastic season finale, and though her moments in Spaceballs are blessedly kept at minimum, that grating voice still makes my fur rise.

I would never buy Titanic, Friends (TV show), that Matt LeBlanc chimp movie, and those Lifetime originals python mentioned.

I advise EVERYONE to NOT BUY "Ghosts of Mars"....don't even attempt to rent it. A few years ago my wife (now EX) decided she wanted to BUY that sci-fi movie because it was brand-new, on sale at Best Buy for a good price, and it looked interesting to her even though she had NEVER liked watching science fiction films before. Well......once we started watching it at home.....I felt so embarassed that I actually LIKED other movies from the same genre as that one. She never picked another sci-fi movie again....and I sure didn't blame her after watching that fiasco.

Confession. I bought "Nemesis" because the hi-end audio shop guy told me the opening sequence with the senate assasination via thalaron was a good litmus test of your DVD player. Basically a clear demostration of component versus composite versus DVI. He was right and you can see how the artifacting is different to non-existent from component through DVI. But I got stuck with the movie. I liked the opening, the ramming scene and the dry-dock scene. I didn't know if there was any movie in between ;-)

Anything with Meryl Streep. :freak:

Anything with DiCaprio
Anything that starts with "Earl Goes to..."
Anything Marvel based "Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.."

I don't like Stan Lee's "Fugitve" complex. Basically the premise where fighting the bad guys isn't conflict enough, you have to be hated by the people you're protecting and topped off with the "Dr. Kimble" thing where you're wrongly accused of a crime you didn't do. It's an underlying Marvel thing and that's what got me to stop giving them my money in the 80s let alone today.

Ok.. I'd take Punisher for free (all three iterations -though I've never watched any other than the Dolf version).

The WORST kid show IMO is the one that has exposed hands serving as quasi puppets.

People's hands have ping pong ball eyes stuck on the knuckles, they wear ties and hats sort of thing. Muppets without puppets idea. The hands talk to each other, etc.

That show should be tossed out with the trash! If I did ONE episode like that, I'd be bodily throw nout the door on my ear! To pour salt in TV variety art's wounds,GONE are the days of TV ventriloquists to boot!
