View Full Version : Slow to 1/2 Impulse power

Has anyone ever noticed that for the NEW TREK (Next Gen included) the ships are always slowing down to impulse power before they fight. What ever happened to wallowing like a garbage scow against a warp driven star ship.....Yes I was watching the Dave of the Dove.......My 2 cents.

Yes, I've noticed this. Makes me think that the new larger ships must be unwieldy or something at warp. Kirk's ship would cut them apart with it's superior combat speed and agility.

IIRC, in ST:TNG and since they've shown some combat at warp here and there--mostly chase sequences knocking the other ship out of warp and such.

I'd like to see ships do battle with stategic warp jumps. Plot a short jump to pop out of warp behind the enemy, shoot, and then do another short jump, etc. All the ships in the battle would be constantly popping in and out of warp to get a stategic advantage and avoid getting hit.

Yeah, besides the 'Picard Maneuver' (not the tunic-pull but the other one :p ) we haven't seen much warp trickery.

As pointed out above, there were some battles utilizing high-speed warp passes at enemy ships in TOS. Would make it difficult to impossible for a non-warp ship to fight, IIRC.

Remember... weapons travel at warp speeds...Romulan BOP...The Enterprise couldn't outrun it at maximum warp (8)....etc

Everytime Picard used to slow down to impulse speeds, I used to think...what a dummy.

While a photon or quantum torpedo could have it's own warp drive, a phaser likely moves at light speed. If you fire a light speed beam while you're going faster than light the results would be less than effective IMHO

^^Good point! We may not be too sure of exactly what the weapons are capable of.

The hand phasers have been demonstrated to travel at a speed much slower than light since they don't appear to simply blink on and off. In fact, in 'The Wink of an Eye' the beam from the hand phaser Kirk fires is seen to slowly emit from the barrel. Even as much as they were speeded up, the beam should have simply blinked on if it indeed fired at the speed of light.

Also, IIRC, the ship's main phasers appear to 'shoot out' rather than blink on and off.

Another strange thing: in Generations, the torpedo that McDowell fired streaked through the atmosphere and then MUST have traveled backwards in time since the effects from the torpedo were immediately visible (when it would have otherwise taken several minutes to see the effects even if the torp had made it to the star instantaneously  ).

What about the "ULTIMATE COMPUTER". M5 used phasers on all the 4 starships and the Enterprise was using the warp drive. Torpedoes for the ore freighter to make sure it was destroyed.

Hmmm! Good point!

Maybe the speed of the phasers is variable depending on targeting needs.

Well, if it makes you guys feel any better, you can use my rationalization for what phasers are: A plasma stream jacketed by an energy beam (kind of like a transporter's exclusionary force field).

Or use my logic.......It's a TV SHOW!...Sit back and enjoy it.

 I like that!

Spoilsport! :D

This is how I enjoy it!

If you've never read it, pick up a copy of The Science of Star Trek. The author delves into the plausibility of the technology from the series. Fun read.
