I am a gold dredger and use a gas engine with a impeller threaded onto the shaft.
It is a lot cheaper to buy a keyed shaft as opposed to a threaded one, so I would like to thread the 1" shaft to 14nf.
Has anyone done this and if so how hard or easy.
Thanks

i'd drill it out then tap it with a threader

or weld a treaded pipe on it

It is fairly easy to do. Just purchase a 1" - 14 thread die and a nice big die handle. Clamp the shaft into a vice and start the die on the shaft. Screw on slowly using plenty of oil. You'll have to do like 1/4 turn then back off and then another 1/4 turn and back off until it is threaded as far as you require.

Might be a good idea to find some 1" bar to practice on before you do the real thing.

You can find them on McMaster-Carr www.mcmaster.com
