I have a later model 5hp briggs fun power motor. I notice that I am having the same problem as many others. The engine wont start unless I pour gas or starting fluid directly into the carb. I have cleaned the carb and intake tubes thouroughly (at least i think i did, it was good and shiny). I also replaced the diaphram. What should I do? I noticed that someone said to make sure a "float" isnt stuck? Do I have one of those, I looked at the blow up picture of the carb and didnt see anything referred to as a float. Also, it has new gas and oil. The engine had been sitting up for a while before i had gotten it. Any help appreciated.

i've had that same motor. no float. but make sure the crapy foam slosh guard isn't deteriorating. the carbs on tight to the gas tank.. but i would keep on using starting fluid right now.. because like i've had problems with i have to pull it like five times to start sometimes more because it has no float or primer to help start it. because it uses engine vacuum to pull the fuel up and its like a dog to start. as of matter of fact thats what i call mine. a dictionary version of a dog. try pulling the rope a good five times on choke then i should start on half choke.

ok thanks, ill try it. now that you mention it, the gasket between the carb and tank isnt in that great of shape, maybe this is the reason?

no its just where it has no primer or float. but do replace it for gas reasons. you don't want to blow up.
