i found a few peices of metal covered with black gooey grease and grass clippings in my yard
looks to me like i didnt look at the transmossion and it has a big hole it it now  lol i like that smilie

how hard would it be to convince the guy that owns the shop that the thing shouldnt have broke like that in normal use the day after we bought it

and if i cant, about how much will it cost to get it fixed?

just find a old mower with that same trans. take it off, fill it with grease if there is no problem with it then put it on. but the man should know one days work should'nt have crapped the trans out unless he never took care of stopping then changing gear. it probablly never was checked out and it was his obligation to do so since he was selling it like if it was in good condition. it would cost a pretty penny to get a new one. the old one sounds like its worthless now, it probablly stripped the gears out. try looking around for a old one it'll save you lots of money. bt he should fix it since you paid 800 bucks for it. up here i can get a 17.5hp ohv briggs murray with a 42 inch cut for $850 but its 3 years old brand new sitting outside for one year
