Just wondering, what is your favorite virus protection program?

Why do I ask you may wonder? While I take all precausions such as virus protection, behind a firewall, don't run unknown programs, etc., somehow I got a backdoor/worm installed on my machine.

I noticed that my machine was running slow so I rebooted. When I rebooted it told me someone else was logged onto my machine... not good. As soon as I rebooted they were connected again.

I have no idea how it happened and Norton, Panda or McAfee couldn't find it. I finally just "restored" my machine back about a week and it got rid of the problem.

Needless to say, I now only run my machine not having full admin rights (I know, should have been doing that before) and have switched to Firefox for browsing.

backdoors unfortunately dont in most cases get detected because in most cases most arent viruses.. just an open vulnerability.

Trojans too can cause backdoors.. try a scan using Adware/Spybot S&D

make sure after your machine is restored to a good point, that you have all the security updates.

dat is why IE sucks. use Mozilla Firebird or Netscape if you want... remember SOME web functions only work in IE.. but.. for 90% of the websites.. Mozilla works just fine.

microsoft just has too many holes in it

housecall.trendmicro.com

I use this quite often on clinets pc's, its free and works great! No need to worry about current defs ad they do it automatically. Its an online virus scan and requires you to use IE.... that is the only bad part about it.

I used Norton in my old computer(W95) and in the newer (WXP) but with the newer one I ran into a couple of problems. 1.Norton would lockup of freeze during virus scans 2.updates would not download 3.certain virus (blaster) and some forms of adware were getting through (even after limiting the remote access feature and using other blocking methods to limit outside access). After having to reformate the harddrive 3 times(5minutes to remove, 3-4 days redownloading at the operating programs) I tried McAfee in addition to purchasing a Adware/Spyware (Spy Remover). So far (knock on wood) I haven't been infected to the point of system slowing down or crashing like I did with Norton or not using any blocking software - Norton still allowed some forms of Adware/Spyware to get through. Keeping Virus, Adware, Firewall blocking software updated is another key - as many have stated not downloading software, limiting access to who uses computer is another.
McAfee has blocked/deleted many of the unwanted adware/spyware programs, even blocked or removed certain viruses that attempted to get through, the Spyware Remover then seems to clean up whats left.
My wife has not been so lucky, just had to reformate her hard drive recently and she refuses to try McAfee for some reason or will not restrict our daughter from downloading stuff.

Moxilla has Firefox......ThunderBird is their email client, IMO is better that Outlook.....other than that, right 110%. Only thing Mozilla doesnt like is the pop-up player from Launchcast, and thats because its a Netscape platform......
