Scheduled for mid-month release is "Wolves Eat Dogs", the fifth Arkady Renko novel by Martin Cuz Smith. For those who are unfamiliar, the first Renko novel was Gorky Park.

Smith is one of my two favorite authors, and I've been looking forward to another one of these. Those of you who've read them...why can we not get someone to film them?! Gorky Park was a great movie. Polar Star would've rocked!

At the very least, someone should do decent adaptations for PBS, maybe for the American version of Mystery. Something for cable, maybe. But, oh to see full-buddget cinema renditions...the settings cry out for movie cinematography, Russia in winter, Havana Bay...

Ah! I agree, "Gorky Park" was excellent. Unfamiliar with any of these books, though.
Ever check out Dostoevsky? He slams.

Wha...? You expect a pop-culture-bred pedestrian like me to have read literature? Wouldn't that be perilously close to being...edifying?

Right, I'll put him ony my list for mext year!

Do give the MCS books a shot, though. His laconic, ironic heroes are my spiritual brothers. The books have overall a melancholy empathy for their characters and a smoothly written gift for conveying a sense of place, time, and politics. The Renko books are an interesting look at Russia even if they are written by an outsider. Also his books Rose and December 6th are at the top of his works.
