View Full Version : Opinion on 10 car sets with WLs - Marketing Genius???
T/A Tom 11-04-2004, 09:14 PM So there are eight ten car sets per box and there is one box with a WL in each. That follows closely with one WL per eight inners except for inners have 12 cars. So actually this seems in linw with what you would expect. Just like opening two mastercases at once. But just like the 12 car releases trying to complete all 10 in WL will put a big dent in your wallet. RC2 kind of forces you to buy a whole inner just to get the WL. They don't make any extra money on the WL but they do make extra money since they are selling this way. Right off the git-go the WL only hunter is spending SEVEN times the amount he normally spends. Pretty fart smellers :b , I'd say. Yer forced to basically buy a whole inner. Not a bad marketing idea when you think about it. Makes it much less attractive for scalpers since you have to pay almost $22 to get the WL. These WLs may be very cheap down the road, I'm guessing. I think we are going to see a lot more of this.
Suppose HWs did this with their 30-40-50K THs in their 10-packs......talk about EXTRA $$$$$ALE$$$$!!!!!! Mattel got bested by RC2/JL, in my opinion.
MissouriMike 11-04-2004, 10:04 PM I saw (and left) two MoPar sets at TRU this evening. They both had the gold van with the white wheels, which is a white but not that cool. I'm not certain if any of the cars in that box are worth $20 as a white to me, if the rest of the cars in the box don't thrill me.
From my point of view, the thrill of finding a WL is finding it. Most of them, again in my opinion, don't look as good as the regular version. (Pearl white bodies or gold rims form the major exceptions) Maybe I'm old fashioned, but the idea of paying $300 for the JC Penney Treasure Hunt set never excited me, and neither does the idea of buying 9 cars I don't want just to get a white I don't want either.
It's marketing genius if it works, and I seem to recall that TL would get a bonus on the sale price of Playing Mantis if certain targets were met. Maybe we are seeing just another way to move more product, like $1 warehouse sale and more special exclusives.
Mike
superduty455 11-04-2004, 10:13 PM Marketing genius would be to have these everywhere but TRU.
Chris
Kenny Kaos 11-04-2004, 10:16 PM I don 't personally like boxed sets, and would leave em setting even if it had a WL in the mix.... my opinion...
CTWLSMIKE 11-04-2004, 11:34 PM I left two last night with the purple dodge truck WLs in the Mopar set. However I've posted this already at least once, it is marketing genius, because it keeps the stock moving that would otherwise sit there collecting dust. I do wonder though once the "entrepeneurs" that bought them with profit in mind figure out that they aren't profitable in most cases, will we actually see returns with WLs in them.
Swifty 11-05-2004, 12:22 AM I just want the normal ten car packs. Unfortunately, the nearest Toys R Us is an hour away and my car is a piece of junk, severely limiting my mobility.
edseldave 11-05-2004, 12:51 AM I have an extra Muscle Car set w/o any WLs . $22 + shipping .
straightnnarrow 11-05-2004, 12:55 AM I do wonder though once the "entrepeneurs" that bought them with profit in mind figure out that they aren't profitable in most cases, will we actually see returns with WLs in them.
What you will see is them returned with the WL replaced with some other low dollar car in its place. And if the WL is sold on Epay, it will be "loose". There is someone in this area doing it all the time with the higher priced stuff, cars removed and replaced and then returned to the stores and then they sit there forever.
Clark :D
Stoned-Ranger 11-05-2004, 01:28 AM Pretty well seems like TA Tom has the scope on this marketing ploy. Why have them only buying whites on the pegs when you can have them buy 10 cars for the price of a normal white on e-bay. I like white lightnings, but have never wanted to get into buying boxes of cars, kind of leave that up to the retailer to carry out, my lot in life is the hunt for the bargain, for some it's just the hunt, and lately for the rest obviously, is the chase for the elusive white treasure car, nothing else. I think RC2 could come up with a better scheme for TRU than the 10 car deal with a WL, not every collector is ready to just throw out their dollars in reckless abandon without a little thought of do I need all those cars. Now, put 2, 3 or more wls randomly in each box. Then, watch everyone get into the game.
dizzys440 11-05-2004, 01:48 AM What would have been nice is if all ten cars were w/ls. i found two with the green Daytona they look cheep.
T/A Tom 11-05-2004, 05:48 AM I was wondering the same about the 10 car truck sets. Some of the castings don't command $20 in WL on a card. They would probably be kept, if bought, and probably not re-sold. I would expect some to replace and return but loose ones are much cheaper. I'd be watching to see if that happens and if it I'd say something to management. Yes, this would be even smarter if they did it with multiple stores not just one. Again, I'm guessing we will see more of this.
robmcin 11-05-2004, 07:50 AM I would only buy the WL set if I wanted the set anyway. Keep your eyes open, these may be showing up at some other places or online
modsquad 11-05-2004, 08:26 AM How much are these sets retail at TRU? $20.00? I'm lost here. Somebody please explain these 10 car sets. I have not been following this closely.
Thanks -Peter
midtown 11-05-2004, 08:32 AM They must be doing well, I still haven't even seen them yet.
robmcin 11-05-2004, 08:33 AM Peter,
19.97 per set
Mopar set
VW set
Muscle Cars set
packed 6 to a case and there are 2 WL sets in each case
johnsreflex 11-05-2004, 09:16 AM the WL a loose car. Several have been offered in that form. If not it should be realized most 10 packs are tough to keep mint.
GeraldE61 11-05-2004, 09:20 AM Although I haven't seen the sets, I would pass on them, the only way I'm paying $20 for a set with a WL is if it's one I'd pay $20 for the individual car. I'm going with a great marking idea though
Wyatt 11-05-2004, 09:24 AM I think the sets are a bargain anyway.
$20 for 10 cars, that $2 per car! I'll be getting them!
robmcin 11-05-2004, 09:36 AM Yep, if you like them loose anyway, its one hell of a deal!!!
modsquad 11-05-2004, 11:01 AM I like the price.
Thanks for the info Rob.
I've not seen these either. California gets cut out again I guess...
Captain Fred 11-05-2004, 11:12 AM If it's a set or series that I would be interested in anyway, then it's a good deal. I usually open my keepers and put them in my wall display cases, so keeping the packaging mint doesn't really concern me. I have found that most packages, whether boxed or on blisters, are not "mint" anyway.
In the past, some of you have suggested that PM find ways to lower the cost of their packaging and lower the price of their product while maintaining the quality. I don't know if that method of packaging is actually cheaper to produce on not, but the result was that you would only end up paying $2 each for your JL cars. Another concern is that it is necessary for PM to offer sets that people actually want. Last time I looked, Muscle cars and VWs were among some of the most popular subjects that collectors seem to go for.
You even get a WL in some of them. I don't really see a negative side to it. PM moves more product, the collector pays less.
Those who prefer to hunt for WLs and buy the cars individually can still do so. There are plenty of individual cars still hanging on the pegs around here.

Well said Mike.
I agree. I am one of those who wanted lower priced product (50% cheaper in my case). I have no complaints. I open up nearly all of my JL cars (except for WL's and ultra limiteds), so packaging to me is a non issue.
Interesting point you make regarding the mint condition of BP cards etc. I too have often noticed that they are far from mint. Micro nics, creases etc.
Humorous how anal some folks are in regard to this...
Lpgeoteacher 11-05-2004, 12:14 PM Has anyone found VW WLs??? I've heard of the other sets having WLs but not the VWs.
MissouriMike 11-05-2004, 12:29 PM Don't get me wrong, I like the different options of how these cars can be purchased. I also like a bargain as much as the next guy. I bought a 10-pack of the VW's because I liked several of the cars in it, just as I liked most of the KB 5-packs from a few years ago. I just didn't think that the WL was enough, in and of itself, to make me buy the other cars.
Also, the going rate around here is $2.99 for regular (VW, MoPar, MC5, Classic Gold) JL's, and $3.99 for the branded (Coke, Marvel, Monopoly, etc.) series. So these 10-packs save about a dollar per car, which is an attraction to offset the cars that may not be as interesting.
I hope they keep developing different ways to move the product, knowing that they won't all appeal to me. I'm certain that enough will.
Mike
WWE4LIFE 11-05-2004, 12:56 PM I love them. The stupid stockers keep putting them out.
I have gotten 4 mopar sets w/wl's and two muscle car sets w/wl's.
Now since i have given up collecting wl's-reg jl's. I have been selling them to local and far-away friends. 25.00 + ship. Hell of a bargain. Since they cost 22.59 with tax.
The blue daytonia looks really good as a wl. The dark blue with white hubs and interior is awesome.
Persoanlly jl is trying to get rid of old stock just in time for x-mas..
But what i wouldnt like is their is two per shipper. Seems like alot of wl's?
rlyoung1 11-05-2004, 04:53 PM I like the price.
Thanks for the info Rob.
I've not seen these either. California gets cut out again I guess...
It's just you guys in SoCal that get cut out. :p I've found them up here in the SF Bay Area.
rlyoung1 11-05-2004, 04:56 PM I found one of the Pony Power 5 packs at TRU today that had all it's regular cars removed and replaced with the cars someone didn't want from the Mopar 10 pack.
Captain Fred 11-05-2004, 06:44 PM I found one of the Pony Power 5 packs at TRU today that had all it's regular cars removed and replaced with the cars someone didn't want from the Mopar 10 pack.
That's ignorance on TRU's part. That's what happens when you don't know your products.......or when you don't hire enough people for anyone to get to know the products.
ParkRNDL 11-05-2004, 06:54 PM I saw a Mopar set today with the orange Satellite WL... had to let it sit. I can't afford 20 bucks in one shot... too hard to get under the radar when the wife is balancing the checkbook...

Pablodragon 11-05-2004, 06:57 PM Has anyone found VW WLs??? I've heard of the other sets having WLs but not the VWs.
it's been posted here...it's a bummer..it's the green VW..and all it has is a white interior instead of a black one...yuk.
..also see my comments on this topic on this post...

tystik73 11-05-2004, 07:12 PM I need a WL Duster,Satellite,GTX,Daytona, and LRE and then the set will look like it should, just imagine if they had just done a few sets with ALL 10 WL's.
On the other hand I will have a lot of loose regular cars from the sets when I'm done...just in case anybody needs some. :freak:
This is only because I feel there's too much bad karma to stick all the regs in sets and return them or cut the WL out of the box like some of the thieving scumbags around these and other parts of the country.I hope sometime in my collecting life I get to see one of these 30+ year old clowns being led out the door in cuffs for stealing a toy car.
accobra64 11-05-2004, 10:57 PM Two or three years ago, when the black box 100% HWs were out, I was in a Walmart, when I found a couple of boxes that had been switched out and replaced with cheap regular issues. I found the girl that looked after the department and had her call a manager. The assistant store manager showed up, so I pointed out what had happened. I politely told him that it was fraud. He took the boxes. His only comment was "dirty rotten scum". The next time that I was in the store all the product had been removed from the shelves. I never saw any of them again.
Sad that some people have to resort to this type of thing.
Enough said.
Cheers. Cobra
chevy263 11-06-2004, 12:01 AM Great post it is great marketing. The cars are all cool. But i think I'll pass on the sets, now if it was a rebel rods set or novas or willys :p I'd have a set WL or not.
And its not that they didnt pick nice cars but i just dont collect them all.Less is more imho.
nascar4al 11-06-2004, 12:32 AM I like the 10 car sets, I prefer single car blisters. Its one of those buy if you like, dont if you dont like. Pretty smart, they are guaranteed 33% instant sells (WLs), VWs,muscle cars, mopar- we like those!!!
plus they get rid of alot of cars. Cant figure out why 2 of the same WLs in each case? I guess buy 1 and leave one. Being honest I have a hard time leaving a WL behind. I am sure I am not the only one with that problem. Its not $20, its $40.
tystik73 11-06-2004, 01:22 AM I actually left one for the first time ever,Mopar set with 68 Barracuda because it looked like the axle was bent real bad and it wasn't worth $20 to tinker with it.The next visit to that store I noticed some useless **** had cut it out through the window.I took it to customer service since not even a rich idiot would buy it after that. When I find something like that it always makes me embarrased to even be associated with "collectors".It almost makes it worse to have to show an employee but hopefully they will realize we are not all mentally and dentally challenged morons with sticky fingers.
P.S. Sorry Mike it is a great marketing strategy on the surface, but the way people react to actually being able to find two white lightnings in a box is hurting them more than helping.I have picked up a lot of great WL's for next to nothing and have already seen these sets sell for less than retail on ebay,WITH a WL!!!
What does that say?
Swifty 11-06-2004, 03:45 AM I think the sets are a bargain anyway.
$20 for 10 cars, that $2 per car! I'll be getting them!
Exactly my thoughts. Great castings at that. I'll have to limp the Talon to Toys R Us tomorrow. Good thing there are two junkyards on the way there. Just in case it dies, I won't have to have it towed too far to its final resting place.
I wonder if they'd let me push the button to make it a Taloncube?
Al Markin 11-06-2004, 08:52 AM If I find all three series, (VW, Mopar/no car, muscle car) With all ten different White Lightning cars in each series, It will cost me six hundred dollars plus tax (20 bucks each plus tax) And being the white come two per case, and I don't like to leave any behind, It will really cost me $1200.00 plus tax. I seem to have found 4 of the same cars also already, another $120. I hit stores in three states already, Perhaps to complete my sets with whites, I'll only need about $1500 plus traveling expenses? Did I fail to mention addiction? After serious reconcideration, I recommend buying single car sets on eBay, or swapping sets on our boards swap & sell section!
accobra64 11-06-2004, 01:25 PM Al Markin:
By buying just single WLs on the secondary market, you probably could save yourself a lot of money in the long run, LOL. And have a lot more storage space for other diecast. Even more WLs.
Addiction: stores in three states. Yes, you probably are on your way.
Gee, how many miles and hours did it take?
Anyway, I hope that you are able to acquire a complete set of WLs if that is possible.
Now, that would truly be a conversation piece.
Cheers. Cobra
markkaz 11-06-2004, 02:56 PM Mod, have you found these in Cali yet?
rplizard18 11-06-2004, 05:43 PM just in case anyone is interested, I have an extra mopar or no car 10 car set with a plymouth satellite w.l. in it. would be happy to trade it for a muscle car 10 car set with a w.l. in it. :)
Swifty 11-06-2004, 07:22 PM Managed to make it to Toys R Us and back- found the Muscle Cars USA set (they had four, all with no White Lightnings) and the Mopar set (only had one and surprisingly, it had a White Lightning Satellite in it). Got one of each.
