Nick, I am so glad to hear that I won't have to sit home on Friday nights and talk to my wife. I was just told that that isn't going to work either because she is going to come with me and do scrap booking while I attempt to race.

By the way, next Friday is the 12th. I know you young guys don't pay attention to dates, but for me, I just wait for the SS check, pension check, investment check and doctor checkups.

Hey Nick, Glad your racing this winter. Will you be racing oval over the Thanksgiving
weekend [11-26 or 11-27] ? I'm on holiday that weekend and may beable to bring some racers down. Thanks, JB

Well, Friday went well. The truck and touring cars are running foam tires now, so it helps with the bite.

How many of you are coming next Friday, or is everyone going to MP?

Is it true that the entire Friday night oval season is on hold? The roomer I heard was the tables are being removed from the Dewitt track. Not enough participation over the weekend and everything is being shut down. The whole season depended on last weekend's turn out and it fell short. Is there any chance of salvaging the rest of the season or are we out of luck?

First of all, yeah it's true. Second, Nick has got some leads on at least 2 places to start back up. From what I hear, the "new place" will be better than the outlet mall.

We'll just have to wait and see. When he does get a place, we as the racers will have to really make sure to support our local track. The road course guys don't look like they're going to do that, so it's basically up to us oval racers. That means buying parts, etc from our local hobby shop instead of the internet. I'm guilty of it too. And it also means getting a good turnout on race days.

I know when I found out the bad news, was pretty bummed, but it'll get better. We'll soon have our local track back again.

Three race tracks running oval on Fri. nights doesn't help any racer or track. Some racers work schedules don't allow them to make the Lansing track but does allow them to make Gd. Rapids or Bay City and vise versa. Bay City runs every other week which I am sure would help the Lansing track but again it would be every other week. Mt. Pleasant runs once a month which would hurt a track that ran Saturdays.
I don't have a problem making any of them except Gd. Rapids is farther than I want to travel on Fri. nights.
Maybe Lansing should look at Sundays if possible to have a chance at drawing a larger crowd. Maybe the three tracks and Mt. Pleasant should put there heads together and come up with a point series and each track run this series once a month. You would then have at least one big crowd once a month. Is this a cure all? No but Lansing would have a better chance at paying their rent. Lansing would get the racers from Bay City every other week for sure.
The bottom line is there is not enough racers to support three tracks on Fri. nights. I would like to here everyones opinion or ideas that would benefit the racers and the tracks. So lets here it. I also would like to here what the track owners have to say.
I don't have a flame suit but I do have thick skin. Mel Letts

This is not good...was really looking forward to running in Lansing. It's too bad they decided to start the oval last Friday when a good portion of the racers that would run in Lansing were at the Soo...of course some were in Canada and at least one persons thoughts were still there on Saturday. :)

Anyways, Mels suggestion does seem like it might be a good solution.

Well, the oval racers have supported us very well. Our road course racing has been in decline over the last year and a half. We had 35 oval entries on Friday night, which I feel is not a bad start.

But in any event, we are closed right now and we are looking for another venue. I thank everyone for their support over the last few winters and I'm looking to race a little over the next few weeks.

I'll see everyone at the races.:)

Great ideas... Nick has the ultimate decisions on this but my two cents is that Saturday and Sunday are set aside for family. We all work hard and are away from our familles all week long so asking us to give up another 6 to 8 hours for a hobby in my opinion will not fly. R/C is considered a family sport but I feel a Saturday or Sunday race every week is a bit much. Most of us are lucky to ditch the wife every Friday evening as is. I am very excited to have the opportunity to race again at a new place. It bums me out that Nick and the crew have to drop back 10 yards and punt but perhaps it is for the best. I like the current track location for out of town people as far as easy on and off the highway. It sounds like the land owners are complete butt heads so it's a moot point. Best of luck Nick and fellow racers. I look forward to seeing you all at the next possible Friday night race...

I'm currently in Taiwan right now... and will be for a nother week or two... SO that's why I wasn't around at all...

My office is going to be moving to a new building in January, and preperations will start in December... basicly I'm going to be working ALOT till at least the begining of January, and probably won't get a chance to race untill then... If/when you get a new track going, I'll try my darndest to come up... but who knows if I will be able to race...

I hope things work out for a even better track...

I am pretty new to the race group in Lansing, but I think the turn out would be much better if the word made it out to more people. Last week, I wanted to find information on the web about the races this fall, but I could not remember this forum's name from last spring. What would have helped me out a lot is an email on a monthly basis or so...To keep me posted on what is going on. I might have even made some of the races over the summer if I new when and where they were. I get busy and suffer the out of site outta mind syndrom. Do you think we could get a Distribution list going...at least once a month, and maybe a home page we could point other people to....where they could join the list. I would think there is a large number of people that would like to race, but have no idea there is racing available. Give the racers the tools to recruit. I will do what I can to bring more people into the sport.
I would really like race ovals on a weekly basis in Lansing!!

11-18-2004, 03:11 PM
That's funny you should mention the emailing. I spoke to a few other Lansing racers and the consensus was that an email based information "net-work" would be a great foundation to build on. It would be very easy to set up and wouldn't cost a thing. I'm guessing it would need to come from Nick (hint, hint) only because it's his gig. But I agree a by weekly or monthly email "news letter" would be great. I only knew about this Hobby Talk thing for two weeks now... Anyway, for the weekly Lansing race to be a huge success it will take things like that to make it work...

I know my yahoo account (free) has the ability do mass mailings.
So How about we, and by we, I mean Nick, compile a list of all the current racers emailing address's. Open up an account, and enter everyones email address there. Then send out a news letter. Then we racers can forward that out to everyone we know and have them respond to the email address Nick opened up and start expanding that list. So by the time Nick has his next race, Everyone can be proactively informed. Thereby resulting in a large turnout, which if more fun for us racers, and hopefully be able to sustain many races per week. Maybe there could even be incentives for bringing in new guys.

I will even volunteer to get this moving, if someone can get me a list, I can open up an account and get everything going....and then turn it over to whoever.

I will be off work for the rest of the week, so I will stop in to the shop tomorrow and see if I can donate some labor to the effort during the week. Busy time of the year, but hopefully timelines will cross.

It appears you are blowing off the whole email distribution list newsletter thing? I can still set this up and get it running if you want.

I had to check out the location. If anyone wants a quick mapquest.

BTW- here are the directions.

Directions:

From GR- I-96E to I-69E to exit 94 (East Lansing exit). Left at the first light
(McDonalds on the corner) go straight until you hit Haslett Rd (I thinks it's 3 lights) Turn in at the Haslett Village Square. We are just to the left of the L & L Shop Rite.

From Detroit- I-96W to exit 110 (Okemos Exit). Head north on Okemos Rd for about 8 miles until you hit Haslett Rd. (There's a 7-11 on the right hand corner) Turn right and go about 1/2 mi to Haslett Village Square (it's on the right hand side). We are just to the left of the L&L Shope Rite.

I hope this helps everyone find the new track location.

Hope to see you all there!! Merry Christmas!
