View Full Version : Cleaning Your Loose Toppers...
GlennRose 10-28-2004, 12:52 AM We've accumulated around 13 loose Toppers since the "Fest" & plan to buy more....Not to mention our loose Red Lines from Brand-X & the few cheap ones we find & still buy..... ;)
How should we go about proper care, before we display ??? Wash & Wax Very Carefully ???
PLUK of your Topper cleaning process ??? (if it's, not a Ancient Chinese Secret)
modsquad 10-28-2004, 07:48 AM Hello Glenn,
To clean very dirty cars, use very, very mild dish soap (Ivory works best) and warm (not hot) water. Do not let the cars soak long. To get into intricate areas, use Q-tips.
Dry thoroughly, use a air compressor to blow out any excess water (never, ever use a hair dryer)
For cars that have minimal dirt or dust grime, I use (my favorite): regular uncented baby wipes.
I get mine at Target (their brand), but Huggies or any uncented brand will suffice.
These work great for any household clean-ups as a matter of fact (not only for diecast, but for everything esp grease or stains on the seats of your real car or grime on your shoes!).
On bit of advice: be very patient when cleaning these cars. Some dirt takes a while. Being hasty in a hurry may harm the finish (I know this through experience).

Also Glenn, should you need to fill that Topper collection, look no further. I have all the cars you need. I am looking to sell many. I can make you a good deal if you are interested.
Let me know-
Also, do say hello to Rose; it was great meeting the two of you at the Fest!

What? Isn't there some collectible value laid on 35 year old dirt and crud??
Seriously, good question and a valuable answer. I have a few new arrivals myself which need a little cleaning, and this thread is very timely, as I can now go bath my Toppers before setting them into a display case.
I have a decal applied to the bottom of one of the cars... should I remove it or leave it alone? It covers the Topper logo, but you can still see it clearly beneath it.
:)
modsquad 10-28-2004, 08:13 AM Hello Owl,
I'd remove it. Be very careful it does not affect (touch the paint). If not, use a little Goof-Off on a Q-tip and gently remove the residue (if any) just on the unpainted base part. Then wipe over with a baby wipe.
NEVER,EVER,EVER,EVER,EVER,EVER,EVER,EVER,EVER,EVER ,EVER USE GOOF-OFF ON THE ANY PAINTED AREAS OR ANY PLASTIC/WINDSHIELDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I guess that list of Frantic Ferraris and Custom Ferraris for sale is headed my way????
GlennRose 10-28-2004, 04:47 PM Thank You for your cleaning tips, Modsquad. Mail coming at ya!
Hey Owl... Sounds like youre having "Fun" too!
Lately I've been getting bit by the charm they have. My originals suffered terrible fates and are probably still buried under the dirt beneath what once were saplings but are now mighty oaks (or palms)
