Hi folks,
I have seen a commercial for a movie called Team America. The movie has puppets! I cannot believe that we get a live action Thunderbirds movie that tanked and 6 weeks later a movie comes out featuring marionettes! This thing is from the South Park guys so is probably a spoof.
From the commercials it looks like fun and the girl even looks like Lady P!:p
Cheers,
Max Bryant

I saw that commercial too. Does look like it would be a lot of fun.
To me it was more of an Anderson type thing. Puppets and live
action (explosions, flames, etc...) mixed together.

And from what I could tell, the story line should be popular too
so that will help the movie sell as well.

I like this type of thing so hopefully it's a success and then we
may see more done like that.

James :)

Check out the "T.A." clip starring Kim Jong Il and Hans Blix on www.latinoreview.com. Brilliant! Viewer discretion is advised...

That all depends on your age, there is serious talk of it being rated NC17 due to scenes of graphic, 'puppet sex'.

At least the previews are entertaining. It looks good enough to chance a ticket.

Can't wait for this one! I was sorry that MTV's 'Super Adventure Team' (or whatever it was called) didn't last very long. I've got a couple of episodes on tape and they are hilarious! (The episode with the giant Abraham Lincoln zombie is my favorite.)

Well hopefully there will be a "Director's Cut" on DVD.

"There's nothing we're asking for that hasn't appeared in other R-rated movies, and our characters are made of wood," Rudin told the newspaper.

Parker added: "It's something we all did as kids with Barbie and Ken dolls. ... The whole joke of it is that it's just two dolls flopping around on each other. You see the hinges on their legs."

This reminded me of how the TV censors were thinking that Rocky and Bulwinkle were depicting cannelbolisn(sic)!

I think THIS part shows the flaw in the ratings system...

Parker told the newspaper he was surprised that the MPAA seemed more concerned with sex than violence in his film, which he said includes scenes in which a puppet likeness of actor Tim Robbins is set on fire and a Susan Sarandon puppet is dropped from a high-rise building.
So, violence is OK but sex isn't.

That's pretty much the attitude in America. So - they got an R rating rather than NC-17? I'm not really going to feel cheated if I miss a few seconds of puppet flesh.

At this point the ratings flap will only bring welcome publicity. Scott Rudin must be laughing his ass off.

I think the main point here is it's ALWAYS okay to show violence toward Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon.

I caught the sneak preview on Saturday; it's the funniest and smartest satire I've seen in a long time. Very original, extremely timely and utterly deranged.

That's good enough for me. We wanted to see it last weekend but it was only showing in Seattle.

Rated "R" for puppet sex. You don't want g.i. joe and barbie to get any ideas.

And that little box attached to the "R" rating box on the movie web site is hilarious -- it reads: "Graphic, crude & sexual humor, violent images & strong language; all involving puppets." And I have no doubt that is the "official" description from the MPAA ratings board.

I heard an audio excerpt from the movie on NPR today. It's a scene where Kim Jong Il reveals his WMDs to Hans Blix (Jong calls him Hans BRIX of course) after Blix has threatened that the UN will send him a "nasty letter" if he doesn't. The audio alone was hilarious and echoed the "War Room" scene from "Dr. Strangelove". Very funny stuff.

Cannot wait to see this one! It'll have more to do with Gerry Anderson than the recent "Thunderbirds" movie did.

Did anyone else see the sneak preview where the puppet came out of the bar and puked his guts out...and puked...and puked...and puked...until he finally passed out in his own puke, which was - by that time - an extremely large puddle?! My son and I couldn't stop laughing... :)

Saw it last night, laughed my you-know-what off. Still got some of the songs stuck in my head.

Yes, the Film Actor's Guild (you figure out the acronym) yells out "Qapla!!" as a battle cry.

And these guys must have studied every episode of Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet. More Anderson than Anderson, if ya know what I mean.

The scary thing is, this being Louisiana, I think only my wife and myself realized the whole thing was a satire. :freak:

Talk about over the top! My wife and I went to see it so we could judge if my 15 year old could see it. The puppet sex was unbelievable! The cursing was out of this world! The vomit scene, however, was the funniest thing I've ever seen! The movie is one of the most viscous satires I've vere seen. No, It IS the most viscous. Not everybodys cup of tea, but wickedly funny.

I saw an article somewhere that some Liberals are decrying the film as unfair, that it bashes liberals a lot, and conservatives not enough.

Yah, F9/11 is Oscar-worthy material, but a puppet comedy is unfair. yah. Right.

Here's a great quote from the filmmakers, taken from the current Premiere Magazine:

Premiere: "What do you want people to be talking about after they see Team America: global politics or puppet sex?"

Parker: (laughs) "Matt and I deal with everything by laughing at it. There are a lot of people who are the same way. When you get all these people from the far left or the far right who are up your ass about everything, those of us in the middle are like, 'Why don't all of you just shut the f@<! up for a minute?' It's really more a satire about what it's like to be an American."

It's a wicked satire. I was laughing at the movie or the in-jokes all the time. They nailed 'Anderson meets Hollywood'. Even the aircraft are kit bashed models, including a B 58 hustler.

Stay until the end of the credits to hear a new song.

Went and saw it today with my 13 year-old son. I guess they weren't kidding when they said they were putting the "F" back in freedom. Many parts of the movie were hilarious, though I wished I had known that the "sex" scenes were going to be so "graphic," because I at least would have been prepared for it.

Anyway, for those who have kids, you might want to see this without them and then judge for yourself if they should see it.

I was extremely impressed with the fact that this movie was infinitely more Thunderbird-ish than the recent throwaway movie with the title, Thunderbirds. The puppets, props, sets and everything else was absolutely fantastic! Would really enjoy seeing some behind-the-scenes stuff on this movie.

All I had to hear was "From the creators of South Park ..."

I saw the South Park movie. Some of the songs still pop into my head -- I just have to remember to make sure I'm alone before I start singing. Of course, I should do that no matter what I sing, so as to be merciful to others.

On last nights "Southpark", Mel Gibson yells "Qapla" a few times while running amuck. The episode was "The Passion of the Jew".

Saw it tonight. Missed the first 10 minutes but I don't get the feeling that matters much. I'll admit I've never watched an entire episode of "South Park". I expected profanity but I was hoping the humor would be a little funnier. That said - it skewers everybody and everything in equal measure - most effectively mindless, blow 'em up action movies. Loved the lyrics to the song: " "Pearl Harbor" Sucked and I Miss You". "Team America" is like some bastard progeny of Jerry Bruckheimer, Roland Emmerich, Gary Anderson and Larry Flynt.

Steve244

I saw it tonight too. I only laughed out loud at the vomit scene. The rest elicited a chuckle or two. It was primitive, heartless humor. I watch South Park, and let my kids watch it. Wouldn't let them see South Park the Movie (uncut). Team American makes South Park the Movie seem G rated.

I don't consider myself a prude, but I'd be sad if any young kids went to see this. Besides the graphic sexual situations, and foul language, it paints a pretty depressing picture of the world and how to deal with it.

I don't know why so many critics found it to be so funny. Maybe because so many actors are lampooned. The main gag is an actor was going to help save the world, and other actors, part of the Film Actors Guild (copious use of the acronym) were against them. If you're not in the biz it's just not that funny.

F91
10-18-2004, 11:14 PM
I expected it to be funny too, but in many respects it was just so over the top that it wasn't that good. I almost p*****d my pants during the vomit scene, but the actor "proving" that he was dedicated? Uh, Gross!

At the showing I saw tonight, there was one adult with about half a dozen boys who all looked to be about 10 to 12 years old. I really wondered about that myself.

I think my favorite scene was when the "panthers" were released. I also enjoyed the "Montage" song.
[quote]Besides the graphic sexual situations, and foul language, it paints a pretty depressing picture of the world and how to deal with it.
I'm pretty sure you're not meant to take it that seriously. As with South Park, one goal seemed to be to leave no one unoffended.

I liked the panthers scene too. Not terribly funny though.

I left the movie feeling worse than when I came in. Not a good value. (And I was in a good mood when I went in!)
